I bought a aftermarket GM steering column. A hub adapter came with a Grant steering wheel. After installing the hub adapter, and when I tighten the center nut I can't turn the steering wheel. Can I sand down the hub to make it turn, or is there a spacer that might raise the hub by no more than 1/8". Thanks

Can you see what it's hitting on? Is it the Grant hub adapter hitting, or the steering wheel hitting? If it's the wheel or the trim ring behind the wheel I'd take metal off the trim ring or wheel to clearance it.

Your saying the cup (3 of them in pic) rub’s/hit’s the column? IMG_3792.jpeg

Yes. I have a aluminum one. It goes over the steering shaft. When it is tightened down the outside edge of the adapter hits the top of the column housing.

The whole adapter is aluminum. It hits at the edge of the adapter, and that column housing.

Pictures are an amazing aid in these type of situations...

Does the adapter fit on the shaft and then the wheel bolts to the adapter or does the adapter bolt to the wheel and they get installed as an assembly?

I'm not finding that steering wheel in the Grant Banjo wheel catalog on line. I'm not finding it in a search for Banjo wheels at all as a mater of fact. Do you have a part number to hunt instructions with?
Hunting a bit produced this wheel that looks the closest to what you have and if it were me I would be calling them and asking questons. Screenshot (27).png

How much for an adapter that was made correctly ?
    Post pics of the adapter.

That hub is attached to the wheel. Fits good on the spline, When I bought it a number of years ago I remember it was a direct fit to a GM steering column. It just needs to either be shimmed up, or the hub ground down.

Shim it, looks like you only need about .060

DSC00169.JPG DSC00170.JPG DSC00171.JPG I have two washers on it now over the spring. I just took the wheel off and took a couple of pictures of it,

I fixed it. I got a spacer, and cut it in half. Now it gives me about 1/8th of a inch clearance. Now though I have a tilt column. From side to side it is firm. No movement. Up and down it moves about 3/8". Is there any way of tightening that? Thanks for your help.

  16. Yes there is, but it's been so long that I did it, I don't want to steer you wrong. But, need to remove wheel, lock plate, turn signal switch, and I'm not sure of anything further. There are 3? bolts that come loose down in the column tilt housing, and you can reach them with extension and socket(might be Torx). If I can find schematic later, and if someone else doesn't comment before, I'll attach it.

After you posted pictures it appears your wheel doesn't have an adapter at all, and simply is a direct bolt on instead? Where did the "adapter" come into play?

I am under the impression he considers the hub as the adapter to the GM column...but what do I know.

That was my impression. Hub, and adapter all in one. I made up a 1/4" spacer that slipped over the shaft. Then put it all back together, and now it is near 1/8"away from the column. Now it works fine except for the tilt. From side to side it is firm. Up and down it moves about 3/8" to 1/2".

  21. Can't seem to find a schematic, but in my Google search there are lots of links to this issue.

  22. Toss it in a lathe and thin the area that touches a small bit
