I dropped the axle 4 inches on my stock A . Still using mechanical Brakes. Now I need dropped steering arms. The only dropped dropped steering arms I can find are 35-48. That means I have to change my spindles to use these. When I do that my backing plates will not fit. Even if I can re-drill them, the tie rod and drag link has regular ball joints so I will have to have a new tie rod and drag link. I am not sure if I can get a drag link with a Model A fitting to go over the steering rod (Draglink) and regular tie rod ball joint on the other. It seems to me there is a better and less expensive way to hook up my steering than to do all of this. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong besides saying I should not drop my axle?
If you must use A spindles, drop the A steering arms. Just takes heat and measuring, like the axle did. If you dropped the axle I’m sure you can handle the arms.
I was going to do this on my 29 Roadster Pickup and heated and bent the stock left steering arm and couldn't get it where it didn't interfere when turning. There's several threads about using 32-34 spindles and steering arms, they can be bent where they will clear everything.
Not saying it's the right way; but I've seen the stock arms heated and twisted 180 degrees putting the tie rod lower to clear the frame and the drag link more in line with the original geometry; the drag link was also replaced with an adjustable one, probably a shortened tie rod. I have also seen as mentioned by @Model A Gomez an upgrade to '32-'34 spindles including the better 12" brakes used in '32-'34.
You can not heat and lower them enough to keep them off the crossmember. I have already done that and put in a new spring.
