After living here for 47 years I finally put an addition on my existing 2-1/2 stall garage. The new addition is 24 x 24 with a 13-ft ceiling so I can finally have a car lift. No more laying under cars on a piece of cardboard for this old man. And I now have heat and air conditioning so I can finish building my 1948 Austin in style.
Nice looking garage. Insulation with heat and A/C will make as large an impact as the lift. Hopefully we will get to meet at some time in the future.
Congratulations on the new addition, and adding a lift will help a lot. I was laying on the cold concrete this past Sunday working on the wagon, oh how I wish I had installed a lift when I was building my shop, for some unknown reason I didn't consider the fact that I was gonna get too old for crawling around on the floor. The worse part about getting old and laying under a car is you have to think three steps ahead as to how you are going to get back up on your feet again. Always have something close that you can boost yourself up on!
That is nice. Gives me a bit of garage envy too. Right now I would be happy with that 1-1/2 stall garage and a new sheet of cardboard.
Looks great Steve…..but the bad news is that you never build them big enough. The lift will be incredible. You will wonder why you did not do it earlier. See you in May!
Looks like you have a nice dedicated workspace that will be comfortable as well as more efficient. Our shop is decent on size (although it is packed pretty tight), the ceiling height won't allow for a hoist and at 80 I look at getting up and down off the floor as cheaper than going to a gym to get exercise! That makes me feel a little better.
Steve. I run a dehumidifier, keep under 50% nothing rusts. Works a bit during summer is about it, at least in center of CT.
I never got the invite to the party with a live band for the grand reveal. Waiting for warmer weather?
Depending on how downhill your floor is, you can still add a two post lift. Just cut out holes for the two main upright mounting points. Tie it into the rest of the floor with rebar and then pour new concrete leveling the top where the uprights will sit. Depending on lift model the manufacturer can tell you how big to make the mounting pads. You can always use boards to bring the downhill end of the car up if you have troubles getting the lift arms under the car.
Great looking shop! I built mine over 30 years ago. Thought about putting in a lift but didn't. Now at 77 I sure would love a lift!
I remember the days on the pipeline crew , buddy wanted a new floor in his garage . We took the compressor a 2 air hammers to his place over the weekend . Broke it all up . Those were the days 10-12 hours a day on the Blue Brute , “ don’t worry bout the mule goin blind just keep loadin the wagon ! “
