Anthony, have you ever done a test experiment with a potmetal part in a solution to show the students what happens if you forget said part for a few days ?

 

I use citric acid myself. I always leave it to cook outside.

Small batches, I use an old cat litter container. Big stuff, plastic bins from Ace Hardware. Never, ever put a tight lid on anything.

 

Not yet. I’d like to try that and electrolysis.
We’ve also used molasses

 

I do have a couple of busted pot metal parts.

If I forget something in the soup.. when I get it out, it will sometimes have a black scale on the parts, especially if the solution is dirty.

Neutralize, rinse and scrub.

 

If you forget potmetal you empty the bucket to re-use the solution and then scrape the potmetal remains from the bottom of the bucket .

 

Been wanting to try this guys mix, looks extremely promising and cheap to boot.

Got some new tools
Multi-process miller with TIG

cheap plannishing hammer
dies for the English wheel and a contour gage
Extra bead roller dies, planishing hammer dies, stamps, transfer punch set and some hole saws

Took only a couple minuites for this.
The knock off Amazon planishing hammer isn’t bad. Not a high end machine but definitely ok at the price. Needs a regulator between the hammer and foot control. The bottom die holder adjustment could be better.
but we got exactly what we paid for. The powder coat in the hammer holder had to be sanded off to get the hammer to fit.

That hole in the test piece was 8mm (5/16) showed the students how much metal was being moved.

 

My favourite rust removal process is reverse electrolysis

I have that same Multimatic 215 at home. I don't have the TIG kit yet but plan to get it and (probably) the spool gun this year. I love it, the machine makes me a much better welder and it's a mighty little machine.

 

Made the best looking mig weld ive ever made the first try with it.

Same. First time I used it I welded up some scrap. Nice welds and put the welded sample in the press and they were very strong.

 

I bought a Vevor 15L ultrasonic cleaner several weeks ago. I haven’t tried the Rust 911 in it, but I’ve seen videos of people doing just that. Between the heat and bubbles, it speeds up the process. I’ve only used it to clean up some greasy parts and some crusty carburetors. Very happy with it. Heats up quickly.

For now, Ive just been using diluted Simple Green and a splash of Pinesol. I selected the unit with 600w heater and 450w transducers.

Sure makes the shop smell good when it is cooking!
