what am I working on?
not much.

pulleys came in for the pieced together blower setup.
I'd already cut the idler bracket and pulley stands down so the new pulleys went on the little lathe and got cut down to match,
and measured for and ordered a snout



Saturday was swap meet day,
'found a vintage replacement for the cheap modern temp gauge on the run stand control panel

 

Ok. Laugh all ya like.
283 crank pulled from a “rebuilt” engine. They were 1/2 correct. Had a crank kit, new cam and lifters with a hone and go.
Never cranked. Caked full of white lithium.
Dang near turned to glue. Could barely turn it.

brake cleaner won’t touch the old white lithium.
Machinist said the crank was fine spec wise but recommend I polish off the grease residue.
So I cleaned the best I could and plan to chuck in a lathe to cut and thread a dampner bolt hole.
Polish the crank on the lathe.

 

Getting material together to build this...I'll make the 3 main sections to unbolt for easy storage

 

will the steady clear the cheeks when you chuck it up??-cool if it does!

I hear you Andy, this car needs to be done for racing season. The good deal is I have my basement that is nice and warm to work on the 37 when weather gets bad.

 

It's suppose to be in the 50's next week. Hang in there , it is Missouri.

When I bought my Kaiser at Gene's Winfields liquidation auction a year or so ago That car had been parked probably it since the 1960s in the desert (at gene shop in the back 40 so to speak) out past Muroc (Rodgers now) dry lake. Anyways that car was so dirty, I have literally gotten on the creeper underneath it with it on jack stands with the garden hose and the spray nozzle and of cleaned out probably shovel loads of fine silty desert dust out of all the cracks and crevices... Every time I think I got it all I end up with more dirt in my eyes when I am wrenching on it.

 

^^^^^^^certainly envious of those temps! High of 19 today same as yesterday but with 30 mph winds.

 

Just staying warm and having fun way better than watching the tv

 

My 348 'seized' due to the lube going hard on the rods, literally locked up. All ok now though after a rebuild..

 

Mark, that should make a big improvement. Your original brakes remind me of the Huck type on Papaw. I’m putting the Bendix type on, like yours.

 

What spindles did you use?

 

After putting F100 brakes on my roadster I would probably never use the 48 and older brakes again

 

What no disc brakes? Don’t you know you will die driving an old car with drum brakes?

 

You guys on the west coast really have it made , NO RUST to deal with . Lookin good my friend

No salt used on the roads here for snow but we know rust.

Replacement pistons with my favorite rods have finally installed in the GMC after the mishap at Bonneville last year. I had to wait quite a few weeks for the rings. Pan has been cleaned will be installed tomorrow.
While waiting for parts the cylinder head I used the first 5 years had to be recalled from under the bench where it’s been since 1981. It needed a lot of upgrading to match the last one since it was junked (see photo). The parts were made into a trophy for the driver, my grandson, for a Christmas present. Still a ways to go but no parts left to purchase. Racing oil sure has gone up $$$. Fire bottles need their bi-yearly inspection and there is a possibility of a rear gear change but the whole crew will make that decision.

 

Decided that 28 louvers @ $5 or so a hole, ain't happening on this stupid heater project for a vehicle that may never see the road, so I did them by hand. Cut by hand with an air cut-off wheel, cleaned up a little with a hacksaw blade, and hand punched with a wooden die (male) & a piece of steel tubing (female). Not perfect, but I don't care. I think it will work, and that was main objective. It's supposed to be a shop truck, not a show car.

View attachment 6326068 Dirt Cheap Dart engine transplant, spray bomb overall, removed from donor, cleaned, replaced freeze plugs ( that’s what they’re listed as at the part store - so don’t shoot me) Cleaned the oil supply galley to rocker shaft on drivers side, didn’t look to be getting as much oil as passenger side. Had the bright idea to remove transmission then remove torque converter so I can run on stand HA! This ain’t no SBC Toto, ring gear is on the torque converter not the flex plate on Mopars. Waiting on Distributor, wires, valve cover gaskets and true roller timing set.
I’m sure I’ll have this in and out of the Dart as I make mounts, exhaust etc.
