Since I owned a 1971 BBC 427 Camaro for 43 years I've always been a Camaro guy. Don't own one anymore, and likely wont as all the great early ones are too spendy now.

Did it come with the 427? I had a friend with a SS 396, maybe 1971. Don’t see too many of those.

    Camaro Trans/Am or Trans/Am Camaro

    The real deal
    upload_2025-2-22_14-27-36.jpeg

"This Camaro was built new by Dana Chevrolet, a dealership in California. The project was spearheaded by legendary Chevy factory driver Dick Guldstrand, who won the 12 Hours of Sebring in a Corvette just one year prior. According to Canepa, the dealership selling the car, it was the first Camaro to win a Trans Am race (the series was founded by the SCCA in 1966). Based off a Camaro SS, it uses a 305 cubic-inch V-8 supplied by Traco Engineering, and utilizes a bunch of lightweight components. It also looks the business, with a front air dam, blanked out headlights, period-correct decals, and Goodyear racing slicks."

My Camaro came with the 427, but not from the factory. The original owner had a crate motor 427 installed at the dealership, and I got the receipt for that engine swap with the car. A whopping $957 plus his brand new 350 traded in.

Yeah, as I understand it to get a 427 in a mid-size car, it had to be dealer installed. I Found a full size Chevy station wagon that had a factory installed 427 in it.

Years ago the elderly lady up the street had a Kingswood Estate "woody" wagon with a 427.

    Captioned as:
COPO Camaros! This was the holding lot behind Yenko Chevrolet (Canonsburg, PA), where the cars were parked before being converted into sYc Camaros.

This is my soft spot for Camaros, a split bumper 70 or 71 with a cowl induction hood and the tall tail. When I moved from Texas I left a 70 behind and sold it to a friend as I didn't have anywhere to put it in Iowa. It was a factory big block 4 speed car with AC and had a 12 bolt that appeared original to the car. I was trying everything I could think of to get a build sheet for it but couldn't find one. I had visions of another 427 build with a 6 speed, but my buddy had to promise not to turn it into a race only car when I sold it.

This black one here reminds me of my Camaro, but it has a 1978 hood scoop. The red stock one shows the sticker on the hood in 77.

and answer for the opening post… either an early Camaro or Firebird for me. and my preference is a four speed. (although a retrofit five speed overdrive would be a nice feature).

Back around 1970 all Camaros with "396 engines" were really 402 BBC engines as Chevy decided to bore them .010" larger. Other than Corvettes, full sized wagons, and Impalas no other models had a 427 factory stock, and usually only a couple dealers who specialized in swapping in a 427 then. The dealer my Camaro was purchased from wasn't one, but seems they were open to doing it at the customer's request.

    I believe the 402 was a .030 over 396.

Yeah, another odd thing about Chevrolet, in the trucks. They had some badging that said 8/400. That was actually a 402 big block They did put the 400 small block in trucks, but I don’t think it was exactly that same year. I could be wrong

I say that car applies to this thread. They’re not making them anymore so I say celebrate all models here.
