I’ve been seriously thinking about chopping my 39 Convertible and this car really trips my trigger. Wondering if a HAMB’er owns it. Anyway, I’d like to talk to whoever owns it and get a few details on the chop job. This thing is perfect.

Thanks. It’s a steel car. I pulled that pic from some coverage of The Gathering at The Roc last fall. I’d like to talk to the owner to see if that’s about a 2” chop, and how they handled the top mechanism. Whether they chopped the irons, or sunk the top into the body and stretched it, and so on. I’ve got lots of questions. Lol. Thanks for your reply.

Bump again. I’m having no luck finding the owner/builder of this car and I’d really like to pick their brain on their take on chopping the convertible top mechanism. Looks to be about a 2” chop but I’d like to know that for sure. This car hits me just right and pretty much the same plan I have had for my 39 for a while now.

  10. Hey Ron...that chopped convertible looks perfect! If the '39 folding top mechanism is anything close to the monkey motion that our '38 club convt. has...there could be some headscratching and slide rules required in figuring it out! It's scared me off considering a chop. ;)

I found a couple photos of that car on an Instagram account, they were taken last year at The Gathering at the ROC in Oklahoma: https://www.instagram.com/p/DBUofdkPSqj/?img_index=7 I don't know much about Instagram but perhaps the person who posted the pictures has more info. Or, you could check the Hot Rod Gathering website, they have videos from previous shows and it may show up in one of them. https://thehotrodgathering.com/

Yessir. Thanks for your reply. I have several other pics I saved that were taken at The Gathering at the Roc. I’ve yet to find out who’s it is.

Yes. I love it. I was pondering over the motion of the 39 mechanism as it folds up. It’s really strange as the side upper rails fold inward in the middle to bring the front header back toward the b pillar bow. I know I’ll have to lengthen that section a bit as the w/s posts move forward when chopped. I wasn’t sure how all that would play out. I ran into a fella over the weekend in Louisville that had a 2” chopped 35 convertible and he had done all the work himself. I couldn’t see the top mechanism because he had it down in the boot, so I don’t know how much different a 35 top is compared to a 39. When I asked him about the difficulty of chopping it, he said it wasn’t too bad. He also covered his own top, so obviously he was a pretty talented guy.

Are you sure it even has a folding roof?

    Looks rad though, love it

I love rag tops but I would have to hold my opinion on this pretty 39 until I see a pic with the top up. I live in the PNW, tops are up more they're down and they have to look good top up.

As a matter of fact, I’m not sure. It still has all the latching hardware across the w/s frame, but that still doesn’t prove it has a top. I’m just assuming by looking at the quality of the rest of the car that it does have. We all know what happens when we assume. :D

I should probably reserve judgement too until I see it with the top up. A mis shaped Conv top can really wreck the profile of a car. I’m in the lower Midwest and honestly we don’t have much weather fit for convertibles due to the heat and humidity. Heck, if I had any sense, I’d just reshape the center bow to take a little bit of the bulge out of the top and call it good. I’m 64 years old though, and I’ve always had a habit of not leaving well enough alone.

There’s nothing at all wrong with the look of Ken Gross’ unchopped 39 convertible either. IMG_8513.jpeg

That parade boot is flat and even concaved a bit, I don't think there is a top on the car in these pictures. Anyone can chop a windshield frame. I do like the looks but is it still a convertible without a top? Rumble seat car it appears. Stance is killer.
That is awesome as it sits.

how do you know this is not a glass car with 2'' chop?? and like said... there's no under that cover... but... even so, i would look to Wescott for the bows and hard ware.... my 37 , i have the top frame... just need to cover it,,.. but I was gonna do a tonneau like the one above... but was goona put bows to hold it up to look like a top was under...

Did you check with Eastbay Speed & Custom? Sure looks like their car or was the builder.

It definitely looks like that car. The steering wheel looks like a match. I don’t do Instagram but I did look on their website. There are pictures of a black 39 Conv being built two or three years ago but it had a black firewall. Of course the firewall could easily have been painted white before they were finished with it. I searched on here for east bay speed and custom with several different spelling combinations but never found anything. I can go to their website and send them an email.
