A.J. Foyt at Riverside in 1965 driving for Holman Moody. He later crashed this car going into Turn Nine after his brakes failed. He broke his back a**** other injuries but did manage to get back into racing within a couple of months. BTW, if you look closely at the photo you can see that Foyt isn't wearing his goggles and they are just hanging down around his neck. For some reason Foyt never liked to wear goggles and sometimes didn't use them even when was racing midgets and sprint cars. Here's a video clip of his Riverside crash.
Back in the 60's I went past this almost everyday on a school bus. There's was a military academy on Cherry st in Signal Hill, SCMA I was sent there twice, and we'd wind our way to the motor pool on California Ave or Orange. Much of the hill still looked like this with a combo of these type of oil rigs but mostly the see-saw type. Almost all gone now except for a hand full of rigs. Mostly covered now with condos and townhomes. During the oil boom Signal Hill was called Porcupine Hill. Not me in the pics. Always liked this 1930's shot with the roadster parked to the right.
