It looks like they may have freshened up a little gold paint. It’s beautiful.

Damn, that is AWESOME....does a guy restore it? Get it functioning and leave it?....so many opportunities and choices to be made. Wonder what all the switches/buttons on that console are for?

That car is nice. It needs a repaint.

  7. I kind of find myself fond of the as found look, but truthfully it needs to be brought back to glory just because I don't think the paint can be saved since it looks so flaky and ready to fall off. The more it is used the worse it will get. All of that random wiring also needs to be cleaned up in the engine compartment.

If it gets painted it will look like it was built yesterday.

I spent some time on that one on the Automata thread. I really like it !
Was pondering if the rest of the paint could be removed ( with an blow gun maybe) then repainted. Either way, great car.

It’s funny but it seems that builders “back in the day” didn’t much care how their wiring looked.

I think your right. On most customs back then, I think they left the hoods closed. Even this pic of mine taken in the mid 50s the wiring isn't pretty. Phil4.jpg

    nice Mercmobile.
what's up with the inserts on the interior? are they supposed to look like that?

    I'd definitely paint it.

Super cool. I think if this thread was about the same car but with a new paint job and some redone chrome/upholstery, the car wouldn't be nearly as interesting. There's tons of old customs and hotrods that have been repainted/redone/"restored" over the years and those cars wouldn't pull me in like this one does.

  22. My way of thinking, the car needs to be redone; but not "modern restored". Finished like in the past, probably can't do lacquer; but single stage paint, NOS fabric, and bias ply tires. Leave the engine & under hood area alone as much as possible in keeping how it was.

We are on the same wave length there. Fix the damage, don't make any actual changes. don't adjust the gaps unless they are off because of damage, paint back with as close to the black and gold paint job as you can get with single stage and call it good.

I am so sick and tired of the BS about "oh no don't fix the damage and repaint that car because you will loose all of it's originality. All of it's originality was lost the day the paint started to turn to shit an from the looks of things a tarp wiggling around in the wind wore it off. Back in the day no one would have been seen driving a car with crappy worn out paint like that, at a minimum you would have gone home and sanded it down and primered it yourself or take it to the body shop that would lay a couple of coats of primer on it for a few bucks and less if you masked and taped it off before they wiped it down and shot the primer. A friend of mine who was later killed in Vietnam made a fair amount of spending money putting a couple of coats of primer on cars that guys had sanded down and had ready so all he had to do was wipe them down and shoot them. I think his dad had always done it anyhow because he was doing it for kids until he closed the body shop and went to work at the school bus garage.

Love it the way it is! I spy an aluminum radiator, so the mechanicals are probably done. I think a "scuff and shoot" is next........or not! Thanks for sharing this, Carp.

  26. So-how does the interior paint stay so good, and the exterior go so bad? Is the top coat fighting with the primer? Parts of the hood are completely bald, and is that some sort of reflection on the roof? If you washed this thing what would be left? So many questions, so many options, so much potential.
