How many different gear sets did Ford produce in the Flathead era? What is the "Holy Grail" of gear sets? Thank you! Bob

I really like the standard 3.73 in my 51 Shoebox. I assume you are really referring to ‘48 and older Banjos and not the later hypoids.

The bootleggers really liked the 51 Fordomatic gear sets behind the 3 speed overdrive in Shoebox blockaders.

Most common in the banjos were 3.78, and 4.11. 3.54 was available, not found in the wilds very often.

    V8-60's came with 4.44 ratios.

Thanks, the ten spline 4.11 isn't special I guess.

I was told by someone 60 years ago that the 4.44 were in V60 panel trucks or maybe that where he got the one he sold me.

I have 4.11's with a columbia in my 34, as recommended by many folks over at the barn.

Ten spline isn’t valuable to guys with quickchanges cause they use six spline, but they would be fine for any other banjo rearends. Good condition gears are getting harder to find.

There were 10 to 6 spline adaptors

  11. no idea how "special" they are, but I *wish* my '35 had 4.11. the 3.54 in it now is awful for a low power 221 at 6000 feet altitude

I bet you could get a trade for those 3.54’s in an instant.

  13. I'm hoping to make a deal with a guy on a Columbia tomorrow, so not sure what's going to happen to the rear that's currently in the car.
