Carl E. Filer Co., Studebaker, Greenville, PA It opened in 1926 as a Studebaker dealership at 49 Canal St. in Greenville--leased space in a multi-story building. They added Packard in 1941 and dropped them "around 1950" per Carl Jr. (known as 'Ed'), then picked them up again at the time of the Packard purchase of Studebaker. The building in the picture above was built after the war and opened in 1947. While it was a two-car showroom, the building was L-shaped and had a larger service dept. in the back with individual overhead doors for service bays, including a large door for trucks in the center. This was somewhat unusual for the '40's. It was built at 43 S. Race St. because the well-paid employees of the shops of the Bessemer and Lake Erie railroad worked at the end of S. Race St. and Carl E. Filer Sr. wanted the 'drive by' traffic a couple times a day. They sold Studebakers right through the end in 1966 and remained an authorized Studebaker Parts and Service dealer until Dec. 1968. At that point, the Chrysler-Plymouth-AMC dealer in town acquired the factory Studebaker Parts and Service dealer franchise until 1972.
