Looks like a nice restored car, it must be for the trade and cash you spent. A lot of effort and bucks to go from the 21 stud stocker to a performance machine.

Since you have been on the site for about 4 days you might consider others input without getting defensive. You started out misidentifying the car you bought as a ‘37 and defended your expertise with o/t rides, both not exactly the way to start out on this site.

To your question; small block Fords are long unless you use short water pump set-ups. Pulleys and accessory mounts can be a challenge compared to small block Chevy motors. ‘36 Fords have a short engine compartment. Using a original-style trans works, but a later one has improvements. If you plan serious horsepower modern parts are required, not to mention suspension, brake and steering to go along with them.

Anything is possible if you want to spend the money and time. On the other hand a ‘36 motor is about the best of the early 221 as it has all insert bearings and a lot of owners like them as Henry built them. As Squirrel wrote, it is best to have a defined plan and stick to it. I question the plan of spending a lot on a restored ‘36 to then throw away the running gear. But again, you indicate you have a lot of experience.

I would find a car that's already been hot rodded instead of tearing that car apart. I know that's not what you want to hear. I realize this is a hot rod site but some cars should be saved.

Agreed, You dropping into this stock car and want to know how to hot rod it in your first post.
Time and money says to move this one on and use the proceeds to buy a done car that meets your desires.
If you want to hot rod it and want our input, lay out what you want, as @squirrel said. This could be a power tour barely street legal single digit drag car, a stock exterior with updated drivetrain and brakes, a show car, a long distance cruiser with modern comforts. You say let's make it fun, a contest. I'm not playing Guess Your Weight if I can't see you!:p

As said 289 302 and 5.0 are very similar. The 5.0 is just a modern design and with a roller cam. It's a great little motor and will need some ford motorsports to shorten it up to fit into the early Ford.
Some things to put in your shopping list would be:
Svo short waterpump with pullies i believesterrt and performancemade them also fast times.
A 90 degree oil filter adapter svo item as well.
I also like the ford motorsports headers and believe hooker made them at first but changed the design. You need the drivers side to dump in the rear to clear steering and oil filer.
A oilpan from a early bronco 66-77 with pick up will clear the drag link. I'm not sure 100% on your application as I play with 32 fords.
While your buying bronco parts buy a smog pump alt bracket. It will mount your generator or alt low on the passenger side.
You can also doll up the motor to look more traditional if that the case. Blue thunder has tripower intake and cobra Shelby goodies
Good luck with the project and great engine choice :D

Jim anytime we can help. I will say Ford motorsports makes a wicked nice 427 aluminum small block that would light the tires up and win some races..

I only paid 17,000 for 36 ford coupe , they gave me 22,000 cash after purchase. I could have gotten more for mustang but, I liked the old rides.
    The mustang was a Steeda.

    A sailor........No wonder !!! (Me too !:D:D)
    FoMoCo stuff ain't friendly like a Shivel-lay...thx Henry !!
You may well know Ford engines after 85 are 'mostly' roller cam motors.
They have different valve timing than the old 302. (They have same timing as the 351 Windsor)
Roller motors have their unique distributor cam gear. Roller cam = steel gear 302 cam gear cast.
DON'T mix one with the udder!
Roller motors take a different flywheel/balancer than 289/302 engines
Intakes pans (front sump/rear sump/mid sump)will swap over.
    Water pumps swap
distributors (with correct cam gear) will swap
Heads (even 351W ) will swap.
Headers (since NONE seem to fit anyway) will swap.
    Exhaust mani's will swap

PS Don't let the snarky answers run you off. (You were in the Navy...you remember how everybody treated the boots/new guy)
