Friend of mine bought a 63 Ford long bed uni-body pickup with a 3 cylinder Detroit in it . It has been sitting for several years. The owner passed away and the family was going to haul it off for scrap . He still hasn’t got it running yet

Over the years it’s been said Ed Roth put one of the three 390’s Ford gave him into a ‘55 Chevy. Two went into the Mysterion but has anyone ever seen a photo of the one in the ‘55? Or is that just an urban myth?

Sadly, it's all gone after 50 years in business. Although a lot of bits of the decore are repurposed in a couple of other taverns.

Since I am of the non Chevy type of guy, one year at the Nugget car show in Wendover, I tended to walk by the cars and mutter "Small block Chevy, small block Chevy, etc.". There was a nice looking '55 or '56 Chevy close to our cars so of course I said "What do you bet it's a small block Chevy?" Well, I would have lost the bet. It had a beautiful Chrysler Hemi that I assume was a 392! The whole car was beyond perfect.

Back in high school I was going for parts at Hollywood Auto Parts (now long gone) and the guy ahead of me was getting tune-up parts for a Hemi so I asked about the project. He says it is in the parking lot. There was only one other car in the lot when I drove in, a 53 Chev station wagon. Sure enough, an EarlyHemi under the hood. Mighty impressive swap for a 16yo kid to see.

Page below was posted a long while back by @don-vee from the "Here is Your Hobby, Car Customizing" (edited by Henry Gregor Felsen!) book. Says 406 but it wouldn't be shocking to find that it was a 390 and Roth called it a 406 for fun.

An old work pal had two cars that he had owned for a long time, a 50 Ford that had a pretty nasty, high compression 354 Chrysler hemi, it had an Edelbrock 6x2 intake setup, he also had a 57 BelAir 2 dr hdtp, 350/Muncie, had a tilt steel front end with flames, was a little rough around the edges but perfect in my book.
He decided to sell the Ford which didn't hurt my feelings, he pulled the engines and rebuilt the hemi (mild) with HH aluminum heads/intake, he put it in the 57 with a turbo 400, (not really odd nowadays) did some modern suspension and brake updates.
He put the front sheetmetal back to stock then had the car stripped and painted Cadillac cranberry red, medium gray interior, it wasn't a show queen but the car was a knockout.
Sad to say he passed not long after, he only got to drive it a short distance a few times, his son got it and I never saw it again.
    RIP Terry.

    Toyota 5-speed. Ford 8-inch rear.

I put BIG discs on the back.

It belongs to a local customer. This is in front of my shop in San Francisco.

The blue converted VW pickup in the background is the shop truck.

  16. Back in the mid-'80s an itinerant grinder came to the small town where I worked as a newspaper reporter. He made a living going from town-to-town sharpening knives, scissors, paper shears (which is why he came into our newspaper) and anything that had an edge needing a razor's edge. He drove a 1948 Ford panel wagon with a 225 MoPar slant 6, which not only powered his truck but also ran the grinding wheels through a pto that operated all of his machinery via belts. Looking into the back of his truck made Rube Goldberg look like an amateur. Neat old guy but definitely jitterbugged to the beat of a different drum.
A few years earlier than that I had a '64 Jeep CJ-5 with a Buick 215 V-6 that ran like a scalded ape.

  17. My old run around Buddy from years ago had a flat fender Jeep with a Buick V6. His Dad was a tinkerer to put it nicely. The fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb was made out of individual brass fitting. He started it up one day and it looked like a sprinkler under the hood. He asked if I wanted to go for a ride, I said, aren't you afraid of it catching on fire? His response was, it hasn't caught on fire yet. Good enough for me. It to ran like a scalded ape. It would pull the front wheels in first and second.

  18. Considering one of Roth's missing creations that was found just over the border in Mexico a couple decades ago had a Chevy 265 with a massive amount of chrome I never doubted the story

So how does this work? The traditional hotrod forum has clearly posted rules about period correct material but this is the honkey board right here. My post of a 36 with a 70's diesel was deleted for non compliance but I see Hondas and kz's in here not being bothered. I'm confused

    Hello,

I found a corresponding thread from way back to showcase the latest photo shot of a famous, drag race, street car (truck) at Lions Dragstrip. (Charlie “The Painter” Ettein’s yellow, pickup truck...a Los Angeles local.) It looked innocent enough with all of the stuff on it, but when it fired up and made a run, that was impressive.

    From an old post:

Then, many years later, I saw the owner’s truck parked out in the back lot of the newly created Lion’s Dragstrip museum set up day. It was if the timeline went back to 1959 and I was 15, again…

I was able to shoot a quick photo of the newly updated truck at the first edition of the Lion’s Dragstrip Museum in Long Beach. It is the 2017 updated style, but pretty accurate in its early form. The rest of the paraphernalia would be added later in the final display. I had to shoot and run as the saying goes.

More on this truck later. But, a little history first:

A blown Chrysler engine with an automatic transmission used over 100,000 miles of daily driving, what an amazing feat. (A 5000+ lbs. truck slated for C/Gas... Our 671, SBC, 40 Willys rivalry/competition in the making... including the idea of extra weight in the rear to make the class rules.)

The visiting folks at the show could not get over seeing the 1956 Ford Truck in its current state sitting on the display floor. The whole show was a timeline moved back 58 years, coming alive right in front of our eyes…

In the 70s Wes Cooper and Kong Jackson installed a Flathead in an early Pinto, why? I guess because they could! I believe they even had it on a cover of one of the magazines back in the day...

    I have a 1970 LS6 454 bored out to 461, with a BDS 871 blower in my '39 Packard Six Club Coupe.

There is a guy in Illinois building a '37 Packard 115-C Convertible with an early '60s Jaguar XK motor.

I recall reading about that one in a magazine back in the late 80's early 90's.

Back in the mid 60s, after a complete machine shop rebuild followed by a catastrophic failure on my big brother's '56 Jaguar roadster factory 6 cylinder, he pulled the engine and pushed the car out behind the garage. When the dust settled he did a second winter rebuild, this time with a Chevy 348 W block, GM 4 speed hydro, Chevy rear, and Buick Aluminium drums on all four corners. A couple years later he moved to Ft. Lauderdale and eventually sold the Jag. Sure would like to know where it is today.
