It shows 10 and change driving direct from the house (between Newton and Grinnell) and 11 and change swinging thru Waterloo IL. Probably about the same running down 61 and over but who wants to drive thru E St Louis?

  2. Stay out of ESTL! I drive through there on my way to work each day. Ugh!

Isn't that where Clark Griswold lost his hubcaps on the family truckster?

  4. Yes, but if you watch the exit they get off of the Poplar Street Bridge on, they are headed to North St. Louis. It’s not any better than East St.Louis.

IF I can come this is my route to @atch place. I figure I can be in central North Dakota the first day and Mikes the second.

Driving an old car cross country takes some serious cahones. I don't mean traffic, idiots, and discomfort, but breakdowns. I lost the brakes on my Olds a couple of weeks ago. The new M/C showed up after a couple of weeks of being back ordered and it is defective. Now it gets to go back and I wait again. Can you imagine if I was 1000-2000 miles away from home? Can you say extended vacation? And the Olds is only 57 years old, add 20-40 years on there and you can find a nice cheap hotel to call home. Perhaps an Extended Stay Suite.

For those that do, I salute you! I may make this trek one of these days but it will likely be with my trailer. Ugh! Sorry for being a Debbie Downer this evening. I'm tired of being covered in brake fluid.

  9. I can build them back up. Over 160k in my '31 Vicky and my '32 Dearborn Deuce.
Dozens of nights away from home, but never a night due to breakdown.
What takes big ones is leaving home. Once on the road you feel invincible!
    But, it's not for everyone.

No kidding Phil. I have friends with $100k cars that never cross the county line. You're definitely a road warrior brother. I always say the worst that can happen is we call a rollback.... As far as cross country, or internationally, i couldn't imagine the tow bill lol.

When I see you at Lloyd's, remind me to tell you about an attempted carjacking in ESTL.

So, how is it much different driving something newer and having it break down at a strange location?

That is the reason we upgrade the drive trains, most of the time. With something "more" modern, the chances of finding what we need gets easier. I was an auto mechanic for 20+ years, and ran dirt track cars. If other people relied on my abilities to drive their vehicles all over the place, shouldn't I be trusting my work, for myself? The dirt track cars taught me the art of cobbling something to get by for a short time. Its amazing the things you can do that will get you to a better location, and more help.

The 1st hot rod I ever built was from scratch with a lot of odd parts on it. Most wouldn't have left the county with it, but it never failed us. That doesn't mean there were not some "car love time" along the road for all those miles, it means nothing happened that resulted in it not getting us back home. We drove that one 77,000 miles.
I replaced it with a truck I built that we drove 40,000 miles before I found something I thought I needed more (should have kept the truck). I replaced a failed front brake hose once, coasted into an auto parts store and replaced it in the parking lot. I also replaced a fuel pump on the road one time, with that, I limped into an auto parts store lot, and replaced it in their lot.
We have put 100,000 miles on my 48 Plymouth, that I never expected to be alive more then a year. The only time it has come home on the hook it has been in our own town. My avatar picture is the coupe 1300 miles from home.
My current truck already has 24,000 miles on it, after only 3 years of use. Its been more then 800 miles from home several times already.

The primary plan is, to see if I can get it moving from local (the location it broke down) resourced parts and fix it myself. The next option, if it breaks down someplace and I can't fix it there, I hope to find a safe place to leave it, get a rental car, drive home, and bring back the rescue truck and trailer. The last option was to call home, and have a friend bring a trailer to come and get it.

Break downs often turn into great adventures that stories get written about. There have not been very many places in this country where a car guy doesn't show up when you need some help. For most guys that have experienced a road driving adventure, seeing a broken down hot rod becomes a call of duty to see if you can help them.

This. Having a 3 to 4 week brake job because there are no parts to service a 57 year old car is ridiculous in my opinion. Thats today, what about 5 years from now? I can see why guys put late model brake and fuel systems on drivers. It's worthy of a ponder to two.

  15. I’m too stupid to consider not being able to fix something , that helps.:)

I was like that when I was younger.:D
Now that I'm a bit older, that "confidence" has been going away. It seems to be leaving at a pretty fast pace these days...
As a result, I don't carry nearly as many tools and no spare parts now.

We'll let those in attendance decide who gets them  and yeah, I appreciate the hell out of you guys. Thanks @Ryan for the support. I guess i need to get my brushes out and start "brushing up" you might say? Need to find some relics to throw some lines on, and turn them into awards.

Lloydfest is for all of you folks, I'm just trying to pull you fuckers together, provide a venue so that you can meet in person, and enjoy yourselves. It can get as big as you guys want, or be as small as you want. We'll always make it work
