Dry ice. Only way to go. Did the whole underside of my bird this way. I've done the the heat and torch method and it is NOT as good as the dry ice method. Faster and much much cleaner. I got a long post on here somewhere about it.

I'm going to look up the article on the dry ice, I don't mind the heat and scrape method, did that before. If its quicker to use the dry ice I'll try it.

How about you built bathtub and let that hood soak in diesel for a few days.
Im pretty sure it will soften the coating.

Find a place that sells crushed and bagged dry ice. The stuff is dangerous so read up on it, do your homework.
remove the hood. Put it on sawhorse or something similar with something to keep it stable and not get scratched or dented , of course. with the ice still in the bag, say a 10lb bag? place it on an area, right on the undercoating and leave it for say ten to 15 mins. Then try rapping it with a rubber mallet or wooden mallet. Not so you dent the metal, but flat, or you might put a small scrap of 1/8" plywood on the surface to hit on . The undercoat, should shatter like glass. You can sweep or vacuum it up. You may still need to wash it afterwards with mineral spirits and then dawn soap and water. Depending on you level of interest at this point you can lightly prime and paint. Or sand and prep to a custom car guy's perfection. your choice. Your results will of course, vary. It's always a challenge in some areas, like the structural brace in the hood, possibly. I've done it in all possible ways and this one is my go to.

In my case, I was working on the complete underpan of my car. I wasn't doing a frame off resto or anything near that. I just wanted to get rid of that ugly black crap forever. Unfortunatly I don't have many before pics. Here is one area. In this case I had to put the dry ice bag in the trunk/wheelwell, then strike it from underneath. Large sheets of it fell right off and broke when it hit the concrete floor.

here's how it looks now. Again not a showpiece but much cleaner and easier to look at and work on!

Dry ice is the clean way to go , then there is no messy sticky residue left .
