Hot Rods Custom intake manifold fabrication

Does anyone make custom intakes? Specifically looking for someone to make a side draft intake for a Chevy 6. Any recommendations?

 

Which Chevy 6, and which carburetors?

 

A few do, but not sure you would be interested in paying their price of entry !

As YOU...should dive into the internet to do your own home work, they come right up, when Google is asked the question !

Or, maybe "specify" that maybe someone within the HAMB group might be willing to help. MAYBE a slightly more friendly cost.

I bought a 3/8"strip of stainless, used a hole saw and welded stainless J-bends. made my own manifold for my avatar

Most small welding/fabricating businesses can make anything you can describe. Some will give you a (don't really wanna do price) but some will assist with a respectable hourly rate.
If you can cut modify/build to the point that the welder only has to weld, it'll cost alot less $$.

Early vets had em. Not cheap but probably cheaper than paying to have something built.

Not a side draft, but heres one I am using on a 250. Nothing but hand tools, electric drill, jig saw, and mig welder.

The 235/261 COE and step van intake could easily be converted to side draft
If ya dont mind welding cast iron

Are you opposed to just guessing your way through it?
A couple more inline cylinders than a 6, but same idea. I still need to do some finish welding and get it all polished up before it gets cerakoted along with the header but ive been dragging my feet and wanted to make sure i didnt need to add any provisions for fuel or gas pedal before it gets coated.i think the intake stuff starts around page 10 of the thread in my signature

That's where i got the intake and exhaust flanges from for the straight 8 stuff. i also bought some carburetor flanges but i ended up using some that i made.

 

Posted elsewhere but here it is again. Equal length 180deg 4bbl intake I cast for the 230/260 series Chevy 6.

 

Weber side drafts. I cant find anything on google.

Buy two sets. Make adapter plates that bolt in like the original manifold flanges, and have threaded holes for these.

Or, get any old aluminum manifold, plate off the inlet(s), fab up a couple of flanges, weld them on and Bob's your Uncle!

You guys have inspired me to build the intake for my '50. One question. Did any of you guys account for the engine angle. I know the carb is level on the stock intake, and they do it with the runners. That was my hangup, but I think I could deal with that building an intake like Stooge's.

I already have all of the stuff from Hell's Gate, it's a matter of getting over my own trepidation.

 

The intake(clifford) on my 300 six is flat. I made a thin wedge spacer to level up the carb. You could weld on the carb bases on at any angle you want. That's how I'd do it

 

When I made my intake, I used the exhaust manifold as a guide to set the level of the intake. I did set the carbs at the same hight knowing I was going to use one large air filter, but there is very little difference in them.

I didnt add any angle to my intake for the carburetors. From the Edmunds Customs intake i used as a concept, and the Howards 6 carb intakes i have seen for straight 8's, neither had risers on the rear carbs. I have a couple of factory dual carb intakes for the smaller straight 8's with the carburetors still on them, and the rear most carburetor is slightly higher than the front, but i believe it is a fairly minimal difference. Let me know if i can help with anything. the homemade one wasnt as easy as it looks, and between that and the exhaust header, i do have many many hours in to it, but it is doable

 

You didn't mention if you had a material that you preferred. If you are ok with mild steel, between thick flanges and bent tubes available it's not super hard and does not require complicated welding methods. Stainless is a significantly more complicated welding process as the tube should have purge gas inside while welding. You can build all of that, but will also need to be a proficient TIG stainless welder. Go with mild steel and try it yourself, or with some help from a buddy.

 

I am probably going to end up with a build thread soon. Re-wiring the car and doing a bunch of other stuff on the cheap.

I have one of those dual carb intake/exhaust manifold setups. Snagged it last year at a swap meet. I believe that there is some angle on the pot metal riser for the rear carb. I can't use it on my car without modifying the motor mount as the exhaust manifold wants to occupy that space.

 

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Cliffoed used to make one. I seem to remember seeing it in an older catalog. Good luck in finding one though. Have you seen the one that D-Russ built for the HAMB special land speed truck for a GMC?
