A chocolate egg disguised as a 671 supercharged SBC motor. The wagon was ¾ sized and usable for other things… oh, wait, that was several years ago…

    Hello,

With the April “Easter” season around and the colleges/high school students are getting out for spring break, it was time to reflect on how a short “legal” 5 day vacation turned into a 11 day expanded vacation for us. As teens, leaving Thursday night at midnight allowed us to arrive in our secret (back then) locations around 4 to 5 a.m. It was just in time to check out the waves and then take a well deserved nap prior to paddling out at the crack of dawn. Afterall, it was a Friday morning and everyone was at work or school. We were the very early birds and we always got the best empty waves… the worm came later in the Mezcal.

Baja, Mexico is not a city, but a whole coastline of various surf spots from the border down to unexplored areas back then. These days, almost every spot has been surfed and has a web cam or surf report for travelers. So much for private surfing in unchartered waters…

But, for us, no more crowded Huntington Beach Pier surfing was a welcoming adventure. Despite the long drive, we all knew the resulting vacation days would be spent surfing, napping, eating great food by the ocean and just relaxing in a relatively unchartered area, ripe for discovery. "No more teachers, no more books...etc." we all know the rest...

So, we now had time sitting around a campfire thinking of what would we have built to go back and compete in the Gas Coupe/Sedan Class, again. The Willys Coupe was now history and the future was still calling us to stay involved in drag racing/hot rod builds. So, it was free to bring out information plus ideas for the future. Ideas are less expensive than random builds without thought. Just because someone had a Ford Coupe, perhaps that was not our thing.

upload_2025-4-18_4-1-26.png Then my brother thought of a simple, but odd style that no one had (50 Nash Rambler convertible) and it was about the same weight overall. Which, would allow us to use the same 671 supercharged 292 c.i. SBC blower spec motor for power in the same class, C/Gas to resume our goal for racing in the Nationals.

a slight rake to give it some attitude…

Many ideas were tossed across the flaming nighttime fire pit. So, the idea of a new style of car would do for the base. It already had some streamlining with the partial covered minimal, wheel openings. If the a 1950 Nash Convertible were not accepted as a Gas Coupe/Sedan Class build, then the next step would be to move the motor back another few inches and now, we would be in the Altered Coupe/Sedan class.

That would not be that far off of my brother’s earlier choice of moving to an Altered Roadster or Coupe/Sedan for that class of racing. (this was before the elimination of all street class coupes/roadsters and other everyday racer builds.)

25% set back motor, new sloped hood spoke front rims…

At the time, that made sense and we continued to talk about it for the next several surf adventure days, until it was time to start driving homeward up the coastline… YRMV

Okay, I found #11 hidden very well in the weeds next to the barrel on the ground, but so far # 12 if there are 12 is extremely well hidden!
Every ones results may vary greatly until @rusty1 gives us the official confirmation!

I see 11 also but I’m still counting, check with me tomorrow. When ever I have to take my shoes off for counting I get messed up.

Sneaky fake summer day last weekend made for a great bit of on site sketching of this '56 T-bird, which I slopped some pixel paint onto.
