There has been much talk about tracks being shut down lately but how about a thread for tracks that have come back from the dead? Some here in NY Brookfield Speedway the Madison County Fairgrounds opened in late 40's or early 50s. Closed for the first time in the mid 1950s Reopened in the early 1980s and closed again And reopened again a few years ago for special shows of Sportsman, Pro Stocks and vintage shows! Albany-Saratoga (Matla) Speedway which was in danger of being sold and turned into condos, however to town fought it they wanted the racetrack! Opened in 1965 as Albany-Troy Speedway and was asphalt... Richard Petty ...CJ Richards bought the track in mid 1970s and put dirt (Clay) on the asphalt
I don't know much history on this one, I was there for the reopening in 2002 I do know it was a NASCAR sanctioned drags at one point. It is a drag strip in the middle of a farm field in central NY! Jackson Dragway/South Bulter Dragway
North Wilkesboro Opened as a dirt oval in 1947, pre the formation of NASCAR. It hosted it's first NASCAR sanctioned (Modified-Sportsman) in 1948 the first year of NASCAR. It hosted its first NASCAR Strictly Stock (later renamed Grand National and now known as the Cup Series) in 1949. The first year for the Strickly Stock division.... ...and was paved in 1957 the following photos and not the first race. The Cup Series ran every year from 1949 until 1996 The last Winston Cup race 1996 The NASCAR Craftsman trucks The track was abandoned after 1996 Thanks to the efforts of Dale Earnhardt Jr the track is back and hosts the All Star race!
After being closed, Milan Dragway plans to reopen in the middle of May after being purchased by IHRA, Back in 2021, Milan dragway was sued by Les Gold of American Jewelry and Loan. "******** Pawn". Apparently they borrowed money from them against the track and did not hold up to the conditions. The judge sided with Les Gold and forced the sale of Milan Dragway to pay off over 20 invested en***ies.
