I also try to give just about everyone a pass, but when it comes to someone (mis)educating another, I try to step in, such as the case with my NAPA Chevy/Ford distributor story. The poor 20 something year old is listening to the supposed older/wiser guy taking what he says as the truth, and the poor kid is going to go through life believing and passing the same misinformation on to the next generation, and so on and so on. So if I can put the "smart guy" in check in front of the young fella, I'll do it just about every single time. I educated them both on what a Nailhead is for a minute after the distributor conversation was over.

[Q2devilUOTE="finn, post: 15566932, member: 11365"]You guys have thin skins.
Most people can’t identify a car, let alone an engine that’s likely older than they are.
    Why would you expect different?
    [/QUOTE]

@2devilles just made the point it's not the mis-information
it was the insistance on pushing his view on Brian. Good response @flynbrian48

Just wonder ( probably not in the goons knowledge ) the door handle thing looks '28.:)

I was filling my Coupe at the gas station when an older couple next to me started commenting about it. They got out and the wife asked, "what year is it?" I had just bought this car, and it still had California plates that were tagged '56. As soon as she said that, her husband, a man was definitely alive in the 1950's said, "It says right on the plate, it's a 1956 honey."

    This is the car:

When (if) my Merc is ever on the road, the reaction I'm after is disbelief.
At a KKOA show in the 80s, sitting on a fence in the fairgrounds watching the customs cruise by, saw a nice Merc with a freshly chopped top go by. The top was in primer, the rest of the body was beautiful in Candy paint.. Guy sitting with his hot g/f next to me, told her that was a fiberglass top that the owner bought to make his car look chopped. That was only one of his dumbass comments I heard.

Years ago I had my "28 Mercury Torpedo Salon" at a Temecula car show. You had to put the year and model on the window tag. An old fellow (my age) walked up and said, "28 Mercury Torpedo Salon, huh?" -- "Yep, you sure it was a 28 Mercury Torpedo Salon, they're real scarce?" -- "Well, maybe not, it just wasn't the Salon model."

If it bothers you that much, make sure to have a big sign in front of your car so people won't have to ask seminally dumb questions. Be sure to list all the hidden features like, cam shaft, pistons, bore and stroke to increase the ooh and awe factor.

  8. Most of you are familiar with my old Deuce sedan, I refer to it as a beater/driver but far from a show car.

The comment I am sick to death of hearing is "Nice rat rod", I have learned not to reply or even try to explain the difference.

and the guys that are authorities on the type of car I'm driving, did you guys know Ford built a Deluxe Model A, that's what my car is according to one of the experts. HRP

What you do while passing the guy sitting in his lawn chair intently staring at the people passing by, in hopes of telling them about his car, is to wait until you're just past his car, say "nice roadster" if it's a coupe or sedan and nice "coupe" if it's a roadster. Keep walking, don't slow down and start looking at the next cat.

I got a story that'll make you guys feel better ...
Sitting in the Dillon, Montana Safeway parking lot around 1990, cold spring morning, waiting for a guy to show up. Not the hot rod or custom car capitol of the world. I'm in a '62 Catalina 2dr sedan with chrome wheels & dual pipes.
An old fella who obviously has spent the past 70 some years on horseback slowly walks up to the window & asks "that a 421 ?"

Every person who approaches someone to make a comment about their car has a different personality and may or may not want to hear the truth if they are incorrect.........especially if they have their wife, girlfriend, son/daughter, or an unknowing good friend along with them. I think its best to try to remember when we were the ones who were asking dumb questions (still do), and try to be gracious in how you respond and explain why/what the car/motor/whatever is actually something else. Try to help them learn something as painlessly as possible. It's like when you hold the door open for someone and they walk in as if you didn't exist and don't bother to thank you. That's on them.......you still know you did the right thing whether they they did or not. :) If they continue to disagree, just tell them that if they will take the time to check out what you have explained to them, they may change their mind, and then move on.

I prefer dogs. They listen well and I have never had a dog ask a stupid question. They do sniff my privates, most people don't do that which is a plus in the human column.

It is one thing if the bystander is just uninformed or inquisitive. The “expert”, who wants to argue is another. I will always take time to talk with folks about a car and for the most part it goes well. The guy who insists the tail light lenses are reproduction or knows my ‘49 Cad should have had a flathead because he had one, get short answers.

Damn, I like that car. Perfect stance, perfect profile.
You don't have to explain that to anybody. Like the folks say: "If you know, you know."

You think we've got it bad? My wife used to drive my old '62 Savoy occasionally... to the grocery store, work, whatever. Without fail some random dude would have to talk to her about it, usually trying to argue or nitpick something. She'd be like, "I'm driving the car - don't you think I'd know something about it?" Happened so much that she eventually stopped driving it to avoid the inevitable interactions.

Conversely, I can only think of a few times when a dude talked to me about it, and I drove it almost every day for years.

  26. I am already getting ready for the comments when I put the Buicks on the road. Grandpa's car or old man's car. My response will be "yep, I am that"

I think the guy who drives this would agree.

That's one thing I don't miss about not driving my Ford the past few years. I'm just not the ppl person I used to be. I need to go live in the woods of Northern Michigan where no one can find me and all my cool stuff.
