So, I had my second set of Kelsey Goodyear whitewall tires turn brown after only 25 miles. They instructed me again to drill holes through the sidewalls and they would ship replacements... man I hope this is the last time. I had a used set of Coker Silvertowns mounted on a set of 55 chev wheels , so I threw em on the car with a set of 56 Olds starfire wheel covers IMG_3528.jpeg IMG_3526.jpeg IMG_3524.jpeg IMG_3523.jpeg IMG_3520.jpeg IMG_3519.jpeg IMG_3518.jpeg

    Frustrating.
You know come to think of it, I can remember as a kid seeing that happen 50 yrs ago.
    Drilling holes through the sidewall??
Did you have to send them a picture? :)

When the Sun hits the Stars everyone notices.
As a kid my brother in law called them "Bleeper wheels"

the speculation is that it has to do with the mold release used on the black part... I don't know, sure is frustrating though

That would have been hard for me to do considering they were still new and good for another 20,000 miles.
It may have been time for alittle photoshopping. :)

it was the only way to get my new tires. Besides brown whitewalls are useless to me….

I actually think the hubcaps look better than the chrome reverse/ knock offs.

Man oh man. That is discouraging considering what these things cost anymore. Does look good with the wheel covers.

Those are good tires. Inside plugs or patches can fix all the brownwalls that he murders.

When i have old or sheap tires that turn brown i do this.
I usally take some sandingpaper and skim over the surface.
Its not a hard work the sides turn white allmost at once
Then some vinylshine to protect it.
Thats will most of the time do for the summer.

these are turning brown from the black rubber and mold releases leeching thru the whitewall from the back side, Believe me I tried everything , there is no white below the surface. maybe if a guy painted them.... I just hope the new ones are ok... IMG_3529.jpeg

Since they're junk now anyway it would be a useful experiment to see if some sort of paint would work. ...slap some on one of them, and put it someplace outside where it gets exposed to the sun and weather.

I'm fighting the same problem with two Coker classics on the '40. Bought them a year ago, so probably out of luck getting them to do anything about it.

As for the Vette, this look reminds me how a kid would have built the AMT annual kit of it. (I mean that in a good way! :))

Yeah but how long were they on the car? You are like me it takes an act of God to get some of the cars out of the garage/house/backyard just to drive one. Although you have a way more of a logistical nightmare than I would imagine most folks would have. ;) They shouldn’t be turning brown anyways maybe a little bit of yellow after several years sitting doing nothing but still. At least you got 25 miles out of them, that’s more that I got out of the set of Coker’s I had on my 51. Zero miles in 14 years and they were cracked up so bad I wouldn’t trust them to go down my driveway

    That is really bad!

I know the bias ply tires ride like crap but they look really good on the car.

I have never had a problem with how they ride. The trouble that most people have is they put too much air in them. The factory recommendation for my car is 24 psi. rides great at that

That's a little extreme, but perhaps I'm a bit strange. I like the off white look. My pal and I differ as he too likes what I call a "paper white" look to his WWWs. I've seen the brown gig happen and once they get that toasted look it doesn't go completely away. And we've all been robbed of the original Wesley's Bleech-White formula which was the only thing that could eliminate it. Last year we spent almost 10hrs cleaning double whites on an L-29 Cord. 6 of em. Both sides. Yes they had to come off. Chrome wires too. My fingertips still give me dirty looks from chasing water spotso_O

  25. Man that’s a bummer. Mounting and balancing is not cheap these days either! Just switched wheels and it was $30 a tire plus tax

I’ve had several sets of Coker Firestones that stayed white, I now have a set of diamondback auburns (I know how you feel about radials :)) bias look that are staying white and drive great.

I do love Olds caps, I have a set of starfires and fiestas and think they look good on just about anything.

I bought a coates 4040 tire machine back in 1985 for 300 bucks and a snap on computer spin balancer for 100 bucks ... I can't tell you how many times those have paid for themselves. this is the first time I have had tire trouble. they do say though that they have the problem resolved. I tried to put fiestas on my car, but they don't fit the 55 chev wheels...

  30. Yeah I found out the hard way that Fiestas have a lot of dish to them, the wheel needs to have some negative offset.
