Hot Rods Need Help Finding A Midget Race Car Picture

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Stephen 'doc' Watson, May 6, 2025.

  1. Friends and neighbors, I've searched high and low and CANNOT find a color picture of Foyt's first midget he raced as a teenager at Playland Park in Houston in the early to mid '50's. If anyone can find a good color picture (not "close but colorized"), I'd be glad to mail them a 1968 Indy 500 ticket that A. J. signed for me. OR if you can direct me to a better place to even ASK, I'd very much appreciate it. That's the car I'm looking for, A. J. in the middle, leaning to his right. foyt playland park2.jpg

The National Midget Museum in Belleville Ks. may have some access or may be able to point you in the right direction. I will see if I can dust off some other ideas and I will bounce back if I come up with something. I know Hot Rod had some color stuff when A. J. won the indoor event at the AstroDome, but of course that was later. Have fun

You can try calling the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum in Knoxville, IA. Foyt was one of the initial inducties in 1990. They mention his entire racing career including midgets. They may have photos and be willing to share. Thier number is 641-842-6176.

Edit: If they have one and will let me take a picture of it, I'll be in Knoxville Thursday.

  5. Have you checked with USAC? They have a large historical archive.

And these are the same people who start threads “Why is the H.A.M.B dying?”

“Where are the young people?”maybe the don’t want to deal with bunch of junior high school dipshipness from middle aged over grown teenagers!

Most hot rodders have a pretty good sense of humor. Stock car guys?...Not so much.

  11. Smartass......come on! The title didn't say Midget Racers, lol. The door was open. haha.
As far as getting new blood on the HAMB...there's nothing that can be done. Young boys have no interested in grandpas hobby. So....enjoy it as long as it lasts. I will.....
    Now....any more Midgets?

When I read the title, my first thought was "Why is the guy looking for short people?"
When I opened the thread, I understood "midget race cars." That thought had honestly never crossed my mind.

I'm 68, midget race cars were not at any of the 3-4 local dirt tracks, that I can remember.

  13. Never started a thread on anything remotely like that. Personally I couldn't care less if young people get into hot rodding or not and I don't care about my cars or parts being worth less......it's not why I do what I do.

On the other subject, funny to you or not isn't the point....it's how you react to it. The HAMB is a great place, but you have to take it with a grain of salt...if not the door into here swings both ways.

Somehow I knew this was going sideways before I even opened the thread to check it.

  18. There is a time and a place for everything, and I have and do make jokes on the here however it is generally with long term members or people I know personally.

Not to mention what if someone new to the HAMB or on the fence about joining opened this thread?

Do you really think they would want to stay or join if they saw this and thought if they asked a question they would be met with this kind of nonsense?

Foyts midget is a 1/2 or 3/4 or was the class (s) made by a cu. in. spread?

  27. back in the day of black and white ads in auto swop sheets, a bunch of us would read them at breakfast before work, my friend Eric was colorblind but could tell us the colors of the vehicles in the ads. he was never wrong. I don't think this will help the OP but the post made me think of it.
Is there a color blind hamber who can chime in?

LOL Robert...too funny...YOU giving ME a tutorial on what a hot rod is...
Some people get their idea of what a "hot rod" is from just collecting lovely PICTURES...while some of us KNOW what a hot rod (or custom) is because we have ACTUALLY BUILD them. b31b.jpg b36f.jpg b39b.jpg b46c.jpg b51c.jpg b54b.jpg b32e.jpg b40g.jpg

  30. I have been doing research trying to find a color photo of the car with no luck but I did find his photo in his father's midget in 1953...
    upload_2025-5-20_17-9-42.png

...and this photo of A.J. in a dragster, wait how can that be?
Everyone knows there is absolutely no connection between oval track racing particularly to those lowly stock car guys (which Foyt was) or so I have told from some people.
