1965 Chevy Impala hardtop sedan to a Nomad style station wagon 409 4 speed

    Hello,

When we lived in a single story house, it was a perfect yard/house for our toddler son to roam all over. With the two gates open, he could use the sidewalk as a race track with his homemade scooters. It was his track and even when the neighbors came over to play, he was the fastest, steadiest and trickiest on the course. As the old term goes, “he had it wired…”

Down the street was his first grade teacher and her large 65 Chevy Impala hardtop. It was one of the largest cars in the neighborhood, not a Suburban. It had the stylish hardtop look, but it was a large car. Even though we lived in a similar two car garage house, it would not fit in our garage with the workbench at the end of the wall. Even if we put the workbench on the side, the large Impala would not fit.

So, perhaps, that is why it was always parked outside of her house, in front of the garage. And her two kids were always washing the large hardtop.

We always were on the look out for a station wagon and liked various models. But, they were out of reach for a growing family and a “newish” old house that needed repairs and upkeep. One thing was a station wagon that would fit in the small two car garage. I had built a workbench in front of our current cars and the cars fit with plenty of room all around for entering and exiting without door dings. So we were fine.

But, the need for a larger station wagon was always in our minds, despite the choices being slim in good looks and overall cool designs that matched our savings. So, we waited and continued to look at what came on the market.

Yes, what we really wanted was a large chevy wagon with the new style rotary A/C unit and a v8 with power. The rest of the station wagon would hold the whole amount of toddler/kid toys, supplies and food if we went camping or overnight stays at the beach.

So, one idea was a 65 chevy two door wagon. Not 4 doors, but a two door that was in the Malibu version back in 1965.

The red color Nomad style two door wagon would be one that would allow us to fill it with camping equipment, coolers and anything “kid…” for our road trips and vacations. It would be large enough to hold my new shorter surfboard inside, locked away when we were away from the station wagon and not on a rack.

The design had some sleek qualities and it just begged for a two door Nomad Style station wagon modifications.

At least, it would match the 65 Red El Camino, but, the station wagon would have 409 power and a 4 speed stick along with A/C.

But, for our purposes of a secure transportation of scooters and photographic equipment, a sedan delivery would be more to our liking. Now, it was evenly laid out and could hold just about anything inside, including my shorter, surfboard design at the time. The problem would be that I was stumped at putting in a third seat for our toddler at the time. And to make it bright in the back cave, so we were looking at a station wagon.

Yes, it would have a 409 and a 4 speed transmission to make it as fast as possible. The new 396 motors were around, but at the time, the 409 was, well… a 409. I knew the power of that motor as a teenager.

My wife would like the dark blue color, but my choice would be the dark maroon color…YRMV

    Happy FAS folks.
Some more stuff from back when I had more wrinkles in my clothes than I had in my face.

  8. Call the Big Bruiser wrecker. I just crashed my car! 1280.jpg

  9. { A Story } As a kid I drew doddles of car crashes. I also made some wrecked model cars. But here's the story. I took this crappy 49 Ford model, and I melted it. I then took a little rubber man from a toy tin car. I stuck his head through the windshield, and his arm out the drivers side window. If that wasn't enough? I cut my finger, and put blood all over him, and down the side of the door. I know, I'm a sick little puppy. lol So I came home from school one day, and it was missing from my shelf. My Mom had found it, and then put it in the trash. Yeah, I was punished, and she said I was sick! Long story short. I found it in the trash, and got it out. I then hid it in a model box. I took the little man out, and tried to wash the blood off. So, I still have it. Photo of it now. Artsy? not really ? 091.jpg

  20. Thanks, I do them while watching tv. Started when I was having radiation treatment and recovery. I just keep doing them. Funny, when I start I draw two circles for wheels then I start drawing without any specific car in mind. Thanks again !
