You guys are missing out...anyone seen this one? This is near Yakima Washington where I grew up.

This little gas station was built in 1922, a commentary on the Teapot Dome scandal involving President Harding and a federal petroleum reserve in Wyoming (the reserve still exists, operated by the Department of Energy and Fluor Daniel, Inc.). Said to be the oldest gas station in use in the country, it survived partially because it was moved years ago, to be closer to the interstate. Washington is also said to be the birthplace of gas stations, and a plaque marking the site of the nation's first filling station can be found in Seattle's Waterfront Park

[IMG]These aren't of a filling station, but I think you'd find them interesting. A good friend of mine has a thing for old general stores. He seems to know where all the last remaining old General and hardware stores are in our area. I like them too and sometimes go with him on his excursions. Well, he bought an old screen door from one somewhere and had no place to hang it, so he bought some acreage from his sister and built this over the past few yrs. He sprayed acid on the metal roofing to make it rust and even painted rust on the siding in places to make it look like the signs are bleeding. He towed the old packard in and lost his insurance because of it (he found another co.) The area is surrounded by Amish so when they have some old tack and equipment that's no good, they drop it off at his place , they seem to enjoy his eccentricity as much as I do.[IMG]

I took this one last week, then started choppin'. It is my workplace and was an old gas station, we still have some original stuff like the old oil taps and tanks, I'm hoping to get my boss to buy an old pump to put in our waiting room.Thats me looking under the hood of the '36. Thanks to the guys of Garden City Rodders and Rod Benders hotrod clubs for posing their cars outside our shop.

  7. heres one I took on a stinking hot day last summer in a little town halfway between Melbourne & Sydney.

Its an old Art Deco servo converted into a tyre joint but thank god they renovated it and kept the original period styling.

Most of these shrinking Panhandle towns are dolling up their building painting them up like this or adding murals. Pretty creative work! :)

  15. This one is not far from me. It,s situated right off a busy main road yet has just been left to rot.
There,s the remains of an early 60,s Austin inside but that,s about it. I can,t see this place being left for much longer so I ought to nab the pump before it just ends up being scrapped.

When I was a kid, I remember always looking for service stations when we were on a trip. It seems about every station had race cars back then.

Anybody know if the restored one in Concord NC. is still there? We went through it 20 years ago. Filled to the brim with oil cans and glass globes. It was off the beaten path and may have been moved to the mostly residential site. If it's still there it is worth a side trip while at the Charlotte race track.
