I've used sealed joints on daily driver stuff - never had an issue. My pickup, when I finally had to replace them, had 250xxx miles on it. Still had the wax burned into the u-joint caps (the factory does this instead of clips), so I know the joints were original.

That answers my question if they need an initial greasing on install then I suppose.

Yeah they come greased already. I suppose for extra insurance you could jam some more in there before pressing the caps on.

  4. Lakewood had one in all the speed shops, Ford to GM and was supposed to be "blow proof". Until I had one let go while leading the feature at Islip... on the last lap. I got a Car Quest one and it held up fine. My Ford has a Spicer from when I had the driveshaft built.

Everything you need to know about 'joints is in the link below.

That’s one heck of a link!

looking online a bronco test should have the 1310 and all the th350 yokes I see speedway carry are 1310 so maybe they are both the same. I had the driveshaft made so long ago, this is why I post photos of the boxes now that the hamb can host photos. lol then in ten years I don’t have to figure it out again lol

Well after talking with some buddy’s and crawling under the car I think the noise was something else. So I fought with clearance and a slippery grease gun and pushed a bunch of new grease into both joints and went for a cruise around the neighborhood.

    zero noises.

chalk it up to a one time weird set of noises? I’m gonna drive it around some this fall and see what it does. Got the new welder wired so now I’m moving onto the new rear shock mount set up as my next order of business.

No photos but here’s one of @Austin kays hot Rod project that I stole from him ;) IMG_6734.jpeg classic

The '47 I just bought, doesn't have a heater in it like this, I think they call the style I have a fresh air system? The simplest way to describe it, is a squirrel cage mounted sideways? Anyway, I'd like to find a heater like this and do something similar.

They seem pretty common in 40’s fords I think finding one shouldn’t be to much of a challenge. I’ll keep an eye out

Alright made new rear upper shock mounts and sorted a few other small projects. Made it about 20-25 miles through back roads and light city traffic to get my son from school and it didn’t seem to break anything! Mostly felt good, still a hand full of noises I don’t like that might all be something like a broken exhaust manifold letting exhaust move around, a broken sway bar link etc.

plan is top fluids, pull wheels and tires and do a check and nut and bolt it. Then drive and see what happens. Feels like a victory :)

Great work. I picked up a 48 sedan yesterday. Will have to go back through your thread and glean some information.

Actually I just bought this car! Haha
Out of interest, how do you go with clutch shudder in reverse? Do you have anti chatter rods?

  14. Good summer ahead with a hot rod on the road!

Gotta love the view out the windshield over a 40's hood and fenders.

So with the school year coming to an end I’m still trying to find the work schedule for this season. I haven't gotten to checking over the car past looking at the passenger side exhaust manifold. The rest I’ve optimistically set for Sunday.

I’ll take some photos when it’s off the car but as some will recall after cleaning up a replacement for the drivers side manifold the passenger side promptly cracked.

the drivers side broke the flange to bolt to the exhaust losing a bolt/stud location when a buddy was helping remove the exhaust and didn’t realize he was hitting the manifold and not a flange on the pipe.

Anyhow it is cracked I’d say 50% of the diameter about an inch and a half or so above the flange to the exhaust towards the block. On the back side where it’s up against the block the crack is big enough to stick a pick into but not through. I actually think it has pinched shut pushing that part of the manifold into the side of the block.

on the outside it seems to have created an inverted Y crack with the vertical reaching toward a the center primaries.

I won’t be surprised if it just comes apart when I remove it from the engine.

when it was a hair line I jb welded it and moved on for the time being because getting them on the car was a weeks long chore. Mainly because getting them on the head and on the y pipe with studs on the collector ends was a real pain. I could hear it on warm up and then once it hit operating temp it swelled shut, to my ear anyhow.

I’m thinking that the terrible road in Oklahoma that destroyed my, and others, shock mounts also fractured this already cracked manifold and the extra heat escaping is going right to my trans cooler lines.

so after the Sunday inspection my next step for the car is pull another rams horn off the shelf and clean it up and paint it to swap. This one will get the studs cut off and drilled out.

This car isn’t really “project priority” but if it means I get to drive it this summer instead of chasing gremlins it’ll get bumped ahead in the line.

    keep ya posted

Sorry for the distraction. First drive away from home. IMG_20250523_075335.jpg

Sounds like you have a few things to sort out, but not insurmountable. Will watch on with interest.

If old cars didn’t give me something to figure out on a regular basis I’d have to, I don’t even know. Get really into lawn care?

lol nobody wants that to happen.

would explain my heat related issues and running less than awesome.

new one ready to go on, just need to chase some threads, find some bolts and some time.

Ran a tap through the threads on the collector side, grabbed a gasket off the top shelf and got the new manifold on 90%.

I need to buy three bolts to connect the head pipe but it’s shoved up into the collector with the ring gasket nice and snug already.

long as the threads int he manifold holds I can sneak three bolts in from the bottom, finish tightening down the manifold to head bolts and and be ready for a test drive!

  27. Nah, I think you are chasing rabbits and that manifold has nothing to do with anything. LOL I'm with @osage orange .....I doubt I've ever seen a more cracked manifold. I bet that solves a whole lot of problems.

With the amount of black I wiped off the side of the block I’d say it should solve a lot.

I’m really tempted to drop this manifold on the floor and see how many parts it breaks into but I might wire wheel it instead. Just out of general curiosity

  29. Nah, I'd just drop it. That would be a lot more fun than wire wheeling it
