worst punishment a parent could dole out: "when you finish the model* you have, you can get another one." *if you had the bad luck for it to be the Revell '56 Ford pickup or Orange Crate, hell was going to freeze over before the kit would be finished.
In the late 50's and 60's my brother and I would go to Hermans Hobby Shop and spend the silver dollars our dad gave us on model cars. We also collected and customized the dealer promo models we would get at the car dealers near us. By the time I was in high school, I had at least 75 models displayed in my bedroom. I still have the plastic 57 Chevy that I built as a figure 8 racecar when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I continue to enjoy modeling and now do mostly various scales of diecast, metal and plastic. Some are one-off creations, and I have several models of the real cars I have built or still own including my 56 ElCamino that I made from a Franklin Mint diecast.
Still cool! There’s something timeless about collecting car models — no matter how old you get, the excitement never really fades. I’ve always been into them too and still order a few for myself from time to time. It’s like a little treat that never gets old. Lately, I’ve been picking up some from temu uk — they’ve got a surprising variety at pretty decent prices. Sure, the quality can vary a bit, but I’ve had some fun finds and it’s great for casual collecting without spending a fortune
