Hot Rods Speedway Bendix Style Brakes Yes or No?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ct1932ford, May 24, 2025.

  1. Anyone using Speedway 37-48 conversion to self energizing brakes and drums? How is the quality, fit and performance? Thanks

Forget Speedway. Go with Boling Bros brakes. Not cheap but super, duper quality and American made. You will be much happier.

  3. Are these the ones the v8 garage sells? I think they were MT products. I used them on a build several years back and was not happy with them for several reasons.
    Thanks for the input.

I have a Speedway 2" front self-energizing set as pictured which is in fact a Boling Brothers unit. You might inquire as Speedway may offer better pricing &/or shipping, & of course Cornhusker (Teflon) here on the HAMB as well.

I give a 10% discount on all Boling brake products. Sold 100's. Sold a complete kit to 19Fordy above. What are you putting them on?

I've asked Derrick several times about doing self adjusters but he wasn't very interested?

  8. Paul used the Speedway "Lockheed" style brakes you are asking about on his roadster. Described in his build thread. Someone else used them; but I don't remember who.

I’ve got a set from Speedway also, they are the Boling Brothers ones.

I have put Boling Bros Lincoln's on dozens of 28-34 chassis with no bad comments from the customer. While the Speedway backing plates are Boling Bros their drums are MIC and are questionable. I've sold several pairs of Boling drums to guys replacing the Speedway drums. Another tidbit. I just checked the on line list price for the Boling front backing plates on the Speedway site and it's $530, Boling Bros list is $400 and I sell them for $360.

By looking at the pics posted, I assume the brakes aren’t compatible with original backing plates?
I ask because my ‘46-8 backing plates have a decent old chrome on them.

Completely different style of brakes. Nothing interchanges.

OP is asking about the Speedway kit that has 40-48 style backing plates.

Every time I look these up at Speedway I get a different price. I think it has to do with my customer number?

I've had the Speedway Bendix style brakes on the front of my current build for about a year now with no issues.
I didn't notice a big difference over the '40 Ford brakes at first as I installed them right out of the box but as the shoes wore into the drums braking has improved.
I did it to get better braking and Buick drums.
not cheap when you throw in hubs and drums but I'm happy with them.

I assume the original inquiry as well was with regards to the converted type Ford backers with the Bendix internals.

I went with their backing plates with the similar contours as the original Fords so I could use the scoops I had on the stock backs

  19. The self-energizing "guts" will not fit a OE backing plate. The top half where the wheel cylinder and the lower halve where the adjuster are located are shaped differently - albeit similar in appearance.
