It sucks trying to stand up the outer sheets. They are 20’ sticks. Any longer and we couldn’t handle it. I had them cut the truss pieces shorter and there will be a seam at 17’.
Not much to report in. I just had 10 pallets of Bermuda brought in. Luckily I had them install it. My old body wouldn’t take that abuse.
Looking great Chris!!! Congrats on the house sale and making the move over full time. Hopefully won't take long now.
I have a small one. I haven’t talked been working on the siding on the mega wall. My hands and arms look like I fought a tiger. My buddy’s wiring the house and while he was there he loaned me his man lift! Way faster and more agile than the tower of doom. I was gonna wait to post it, until I was completely finished, but here ya go.
We also got a buttload of rain in a short amount of time. Roughly 5 inches in 24 hours. I got a little water in the shop side of the place, but I have a little more dirt work to help with that. Here are some pics of my neighbors place . They put out an SOS to the neighbors asking for help, so I ran up there and got wet. The pond upstream busted the dam. All hell broke loose. These pics are on the back porch. At least I don’t have to water my new sod.
So, this isn’t a major update, but there is a local chain called Joanne’s fabric. They are going under and selling everything in the store. Fixtures and all. I took a chance and asked the manager what they would take for the fabric racks. Well $770 later I am the proud owner of 6 sections of fabric display racks. It should hold approx 9 rolls of fabric per section. I am getting the brackets, rolls and the racks. Going to pick them up in the morning.
So, I show up to start breaking it all down and the Manager comes by and I asked her “How much if I take the rest of the racks?”. So for another $200 I got the last 4 racks and brackets. SonI have a total of 10 sections now. I’m an idiot.
So, my first line of business once I retired was to finish the “Wall of Doom” (TM) . I got the old awnings I picked up off of FB mounted and painted. Windows cased out etc. One huge headache out of the way. I still have to finish the landing and staircase.
Today was a good score day for the old Dust Bowl Speed Shop World Headquarters. The wife told me this morning that a local estate sale had a lot of engines and tools, it was a fellow drag racer that had passed. I picked up 4 big commercial bolt bins. I'll post pics, once I get them unloaded. Then we see a Jafco MCM wooden desk for sale on FB Marketplace. I had been watching it for about a week, but they wanted like $450 for it. Well, today they cut the bid in half to $220. I offered $200 and said I would be there to pick it up today. They took the offer and we ended up with this. It's for the shop office. The office will be period correct 1960-65, for the most part. I have been collecting original light fixtures and wall plate covers, as I see them. Anyway, here is the pic of the desk.
Lol. Just think of all the great furniture you’ll be able to make once you get set up now that you are retired.
Having a disagreement over our piano now, my wife says sell it, but I say never. Once I get the home dried in, I'm moving the piano up there. I have an older desk to move as well, but the good thing about it is that it comes with an iMac 5k Retina! As for Memorial Day Weekend, the prosecuting attorney is blowin' rusty nails through is nose because I won't provide him more info, threatening to have my response revoked. But I realized that I have what I need to start moving machines up to the shop, and that goes for the log shell also, the new encroachment I had cut into my driveway will pay off in the end, IMO. I'm now waiting to hear if the judge will hear the case. Don't ever believe an attorney, this one has lied to me 3 times already...your place is looking good. I've been looking for property in Idaho, as a backup, if I need to sell my house. If I have to I'll live in Clear Lake during the winter months and go back to Idaho during the spring/summer/fall months. Taxes are pretty low in Idaho, with a lot of BLM hunting land. Hunting is a mixed bag in CA, good at Clear Lake, and bad in San Jose...
This morning I threw together the landing. I used scraps from the house build. I had some left over LVL beams and some 2x10’s. I decked it with some sub floor material. The plans are to add a stick built wall structure underneath and sheet it to match the rest. I will end up with a storage room about 6x8ish. I’ll find something to put in there. The staircase will come off the right side.
Looks suspiciously like the "Observation Deck"... . Marcus... Don't suppose you have any of those cool-lookin' binoculars-on-a-stand(like seen at "Historic Sites & pull-offs) to put on one of the corners? Suppose that might be too "suggestive"? . Yup. all kinds of room for stuff there - like the Liberty, esp if the area is closed(walled) off. Concrete block, with hidden locks & access, anyone? .
Don’t get a lot done this week. I did my best to save the planet. I am a tightwad, so when my AC guy left me a pile of insulated ducts, I had the wife strip off the insulation and I packed the walls of the welding shop. It’s mainly for sound. I don’t wanna hear mama doing laundry or dishes while I am trying to weld. I also insulated all of the pipe in the walls. It will all be behind the spray foamed envelope, but pipe insulation is cheap. I went ahead and sheeted it in 3/4” plywood.
I have mainly been focusing on the house. Tons of infrastructure stuff, very little visual, hood ornament type stuff. Framed up the fireplace and installed tons of blocking for the TV, Mantle etc. you can see all of the cat 6 cable for the cameras and the data lines. I am hiding all of that inside the fireplace chimney, since the fireplace is just for looks.
The spray foam guy shows up on Thursday/Friday and drywallers on Monday. I have been trying to make sure I have everything in place prior to him spraying. I’m sure I will forget something. The electrical is roughed in and my electrician is a buddy that is as OCD as I am, so I was tickled to see the panel.
BossHog, Looking good. Your wife must be happy! I think Bonners Ferry, ID is calling me. Low taxes, no building codes, no permits, do whatever you want, and .4% property tax. There is no question, I'm selling my house and splitting up with my wife. I think that means my wife is not too happy... (I'm not thrilled about it either, and just found out a few weeks ago) Going to go shop-do-minium if possible, similar to what I have. Fortunately, I have the shop now, so will ship everything up there to store in the shop. I'd like to find somewhere with septic, electrical, water, all in...similar to what I have, and just have enough space to live in the shop. Ship my sawmill and a lift up there and use it to mill timber, lots of tall straight doug fir and cedar. How big is your shop/living? I've been told I could build a 60x100 shop for about $50k, that's cheaper than CA, and my contractor offered to drive up and do a 30x40 with my plans if I let him hunt on the property. Unfortunately, the only way I can give my wife cash is to sell the house. Lots of 10 - 50 acre parcels for $200k-$500k, low, low, low taxes with no living space. Like $200/year. I will live in CA during the winter, Idaho the rest of the year. There's even a municipal swimming pool in Bonners Ferry that opens on June 1st, and is open for adults, 4-5 hours per day. That seems like my destination. 1000s of BLM land up there. I'm driving up after Labor Day to look for land and make an offer. I'm told waiting until after labor day will warrant best prices on land and motels. Finally, I will get a car lift in my new shop, and maybe one up there also. Right now I'm broke until I sell my house.
