Yup, if you like paying lots of money for a warranty, then cheap batteries are not for you.

Under the seat, but still a hole in floor there were about 1/2 a battery can hang down below floor. Having a bat too small to crank much can kill the fun too EZ. Amp.s is key,an big amp.s is size.
I helped my buddy put on under his red 23 T that dose not show much,in fact he likes to show others were it is. The battery box we made for it is" Mirror finish stainless steel=so looking at it,one can't see it/as it looks like the ground under the the car. Fools a lot of guys.

In most cases the only difference between a 4 year battery and a 1 year battery is the sticker itself. They are betting you won't need it. Somebody who worked a summer between semesters worked at a battery manufacturer and said OCV was measured as they came off the line, those with the highest voltage got the longest warranty.

Odyssey batteries can be mounted in any position except inverted.

I am also using the PC680 in my Model A
with a SBC and hi-torque starter. I replace it about every 7 years and don't use any type of trickle charge. If I remember correctly the Dyna-Bat is a re-labeled Odyssey for more money.

I have one of the Braille ones in my 31 roadster over the rear fender well. It was one of the higher CCA batteries for its size. So far works well. Anyone know if I can use a regular battery tender on it?

Well, those mower batteries should be for big fuggin mowers:eek:

The thing to be concerned about is the max amps they'll take from your charging system. Most mower/bike/powersport batteries want no more than 15-20 amps. A standard no frills alternator pumps about 48-55 at full tilt, or about 2000 engine RPM. Big batteries from bigger stuff, likely fine, but the one in my mower? I would't even consider it for car duty. And now we're talking under a seat too? Maybe I'm just a stubborn old bastid but heat and acid and amps and such right under my ass sounds less appealing than another alternative. I see nobody mentioned Optimas. I hate those fuckers...

Perhaps this is the one area where $$$ spent now saves a multiple amount later, if only for the specialized application.

Excuse me while I go thumb through some 60 year old magazines, looking for ads for AGM batteries :)

DSCF3492.JPG Mine is not a compact battery, but I don't have a charging system. It is a Auto craft gel 75 from Advance
auto. It's 640 CCA and it cranks my small block Ford and runs my electric fuel pump and water pump and ignition box .
I paid about 90 bucks for it with my discount.

Our 50 Chevy has a large Walmart special in the trunk. Been there since we bought the car in 2011.

I get the biggest battery with the most CCA's that will fit the battery boxes. I'm like squirrel, I buy the cheap Walmart batteries. I wouldn't trust a small lawnmower battery in a car, heck, I've had problems with them having enough amps to crank a mower.

Hate to bring up an old thread, but do you have to trickle charge your odyssey batteries? Mine lasted about a year and a half before it stopped working. Wont hold a charge now and even tried that jumping it in series technique but to no avail. It is done for.

Debating rewiring my car for a traditional style battery, but maybe the fact that I never had it on a trickle charge was my problem? Nervous that the charger will catch on fire (maybe unwarranted fear??).

I did have a kill switch connected to the positive end of the battery so I could shut the car off in a pinch or more so what I thought would preserve my battery. My alternator seems to be working fine but never deep dove it.

    Any help would be appreciated!!

I keep a solar on my odyessy’s but the ones I’ve bought in the last few years are not like the old ones at all.

As an aside, my OT Miatas have their battery in the trunk. The vent is a hose barb. The vent hose comes out under the car. Keeps the sulfuric acid gases, vented while charging, out of the trunk. The batteries for these are not cheap. There are cheap batteries that will fit the hole, no vent barbs. Something to think about if your battery is in the cab or trunk. Miata batteries are small, may be worth looking into, especially if yours is inside. Mike

I have my battery under my seat in my model a. Its in the stock seat riser location. I doubt it gets any sort of ventilation... Does it need to be ventilated like a miata battery?

I'm runninng a 283 stock motor. So nothing big on HP.

  17. So is this to say that the newer model chargers are better or worse in some way than the older models? Are they larger or smaller? Harder or easier to use? Better or worse build quality? More or less expensive? Or do they just look different?

when I read it, it says that the newer model Odyessy batteries are worse than the older ones.

but on the subject of chargers, yes, modern "smart" chargers are worse than the old ones, they think a dead 12v battery is really a 6v battery, and won't charge it.

  19. You're probably right, but when I saw "solar" I thought of a solar charger connected to an "odyssey" battery. Just seemed a bit vague.

I do not have a trickle charger on any of my three Odessey Batteries. My wife's truck has not been driven since last fall as it has a tranny issue and is waiting to be seen by the local tranny guru. I had her check on the battery which has a charger installed under the seat, and it was till at 75%. It took less than an hour to take it back to 100%. The one in my roadster was purchased 10 years ago and has never been on a charger or trickle charger.

If yours lasted a year you either got a bad battery or you have an issue with your car.

I tried to save a few bucks when my dune buggy battery went flat and bought a Walmart special, it won't hold a charge over the winter and it has an isolator switch. Crappy battery to have on an off-road vehicle. It is getting an Odessey as well. They have proven their worth to me.

It is cute that none of the 60 year old magazines have ads for AGM batteries, but they also don't have ads for non maintenance, lead acid (flat top) batteries that you all are using. If your battery doesn't have caps on top so you can add water, you aren't being traditional just less modern.

The problem I've seen several times that the battery mount or box is built for a specific battery only to have it discontinued or changed in size or configuration. Trying to deal with that is bad enough, but what happens when you're on the road?

I guess chances are I could have a bad battery. But then again I wired my car from scratch (first time) and chances are I probably messed something up. I do have a diode running to my alternator that seemed to stop working (id turn key to off and it would keep running) and only way to turn it off would be to use the kill switch. But I thought I fixed that.

Could alternator not charging the battery properly be the source of me killing my battery prematurely?

Or I guess theres potential that I have a voltage leak elsewhere in my wiring harness. Could a slow steady drain on battery due to improper wiring cause an AGM battery to die completely to the point of being unchargable?

    Thanks

2 x 6V - Same total size but easier to squeeze behind panels etc.

There are a lot of things that could cause a slow drain. My PU, I mentioned, has an electric clock in the glove box door that would drain the battery over prolonged periods. I always install isolator switches on my batteries to keep them form drawing down over storage periods.

An alternator not charging would definitely kill a battery over time. An engine can run off the battery for a while, provided the lights and accessories are off. That is a good thing to check next time you have it running. Make sure you rev up the engine (2000 rpms or so) as some systems require an exciter to get the alternator charging. and of course, an alternator won't charge a dead battery so charge it up first.

Once an AGM Odessey battery is flat (no charge) they need to be charged with the correct charger. A typical battery charger will not suffice. I use this one form Duracell.

It features a recovery mode just for AGM batteries. I mounted this one under the seat to make it easier for my wife to maintain her truck without me around. It will serve as a trickle charger as well, but I don't like leaving things plugged in for months on end and it doesn't require it for now. If your Odessey is flat, get a correct charger on it with a AGM recovery mode. Add an isolator switch off the battery and use it religiously. I shut mine off every time I bring the cars home. That is overkill but it is a habit I have got into following.

Over the last 20 plus years, I had two Dyna Batts in my roadster. The are dry cell and only weigh about 11 lbs. Very low on cranking amps. If you crank too long, you need a jump. I just replaced it with a Braille battery from Summit. 1000 crank amps. 15 lbs. Starts the car much faster. I need a small light weight battery due to the mounting location behind the 40 dash in my roadster. So far I am happy with the Braille, it is an AGM and I keep a standard battery tender on it when not in use.
