I saw this posted on FB by one of my friends, Ed runs a neon sign business next door to Darrel Schroeders Speed and Custom shop in Troutdale, Oregon. Ed says there will be car parts for sale at Darrel's place and he is going to have tubing benders at his shop. I plan to head over in the morning, weather looks good for a little drive. Maybe hit the Bridge of the Gods on my way home and take the Columbia River Gorge Hwy home, stop and grab a bite along the way. 30 years ago, I bought an old neon guitar sign from a friend that was closing her bar in Kalama. It worked great until it fell off the wall (swine installer) and broke a small tube. Ever since it has been gathering dust in my garage. Thus, this event is a perfect way to spend the morning for me. Driving a nice car, checking out the cool stuff at Darrel's, do some parts shopping while I get my sign fixed. Who knows what I will come home with. I love the anticipation of attending a swap meet. Endless possibilities. For those that aren't familiar, Darrel is probably the nicest guy you'll meet in this hobby/business. He built the frame for my roadster a million years ago. His shop is always full of high-end hot rods and fabrication. It is always nice to see him and visit. So, if you are bored in the morning and looking for something to do, cruise out to Troutdale and kick a tire or two. Say Hi if you see me. I'm probably driving the Olds or the PU, I wanted to drive the roadster, but that sign is going to be a tight squeeze in there and then I can't buy anything! That would suck. Hope to see you in Troutdale.
Swap meet and car show at Rickreall Polk County Fairgrounds also Saturday! I'm tied up Sat. morning already, but maybe if I get finished before noon I might run out to the one at Schroeder's after noon. On another topic....did you hear they had the opener at PIR Wed. afternoon? It was still wet streets, and had rained all day at my place, so I didn't even think they'd have it. But I guess new management decided to go rain or shine.
I have little interest in shows but I love swap meets so you guys keep letting us know about swap meets coming up
Kim took his 31 A coupe, he said it felt very normal, like nothing had changed. I had no interest in showing up early and waiting in line. I’ll go next week and check it out. I took a couple pics. Found this book seller had a couple copies. my favorite part was it was checked out from a local high school. And this car plaque from the beach, anyone heard of them? I bought a porcelain “Men’s” room sign for my WC. And this old gum display/sales container for Mrs.BB
I walked through the neon store that an old friend of mine from grade school operated s as a hobby. He had some cool stuff for sale there’s something about neon. Always like looking at it. One of the crafts people that work in the medium took my guitar sign to repair it. It should be done in a couple weeks. I look forward to having our back on the wall.
It was a fun morning. I wanted to take my roadster but the sign wouldn’t fit in the back so I took the Olds. Nice day for some top down driving. Chatted with Jake Steel and a few other guys from the Estranged and Briz from the Slo Poks. Always nice to see the guys. Need to do more of it. Now I’m back at the house, wife made me a cocktail with Malibu, orange juice and pineapple juice. Very tasty. Watching golf on TV before I go pressure was my shop floor. Have a pleasant Saturday whatever you are doing. BB
Did you hear anything about the turnout on Wed. at PIR? Guessing this coming Wed. will be better if weathers goes well.
I saw a video on FB and it looked like a fair turn out. I'll probably go this next week, maybe see you out there
I missed a call from my two buddies I go with and a message asking where I was? Guess they made it out there also, and I'm still puzzled how their areas were dry, and my house was wet right up to around 2:30? One lives on Hayden Island, and one over in Woodstock area.
Several years ago on a trek to the S.Dak. Black Hills we mapped a route as the crow flies from Pappillion Ne. choosing the roads less traveled through the Nebraska Sand Hills as the brother-in-law had never experienced that portion of the state, stopping midway or so at a higher vantage point for a photo shoot where only the wind & an occasional Golden Rod ( the bird type) could be heard, we took in the solitude but observed a summer storm looming in the Northwest. We made it with minimal time to spare to a small town to seek shelter where a local 1950's 60's era motel complete with a neon adorned sizable canopy saved our vehicles as golf ball hail rained down, unfortunately the neon did not fare quite so well, & really felt for the owner's loss.
I ran out to help a buddy mount the hood on his F100 around 1:30 and it was still raining in Battle Ground. At 2:30 the skies were threatening, by 4:00 it was sunny and dry at my house. It's like God parted the waters just for the car show and I was sitting on my hands on the banks of the Red Sea scared to get my chariot wet.
You tell a good story. I have never been to the Black Hills or Nebraska for that matter. Are sand hills like sand dunes or...? Anyway. your post makes me want to travel and see more of our country. Golf ball sized hail? Only in a Bourbon glass, thank you.
I'll say this for our swap meets, they are more social gatherings. You see friends, meet new ones, laugh, forget about politics and that crap, get out of the house, put some miles on your rig and enjoy some toxic masculinity. Never, NEVER tell the wives it is fun! I'd like to shoot the man who thought it would be fun to teach his wife how to golf.
Rolling wind swept grass lands comprise a huge portion of Nebraska, on occasion where the never ceasing winds have carved out what is commonly called a "Blow-out" revealing beneath the grass under lying sand or a rocky out crop, cattle barons were known to plant wind dampening vegetation or even a decommissioned car or truck body to further control erosion of their valuable grass lands. I've photos of a 37 Ford flat back sedan in just such a final calling, & my son has a 32-sedan rescued likewise.
That's what ours are like too, but you seem to have more cool old stuff you find. A lot of ours are the same guys bringing the same extravagantly priced stuff from one meet to the next. It becomes more entertainment than parts collection, especially with today's online parts availability it makes less urgency in some cases for swap meet stuff if it's not unobtainium.
