Projects Engine Color Opinions Please

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anothercarguy, Jun 8, 2025.

  1. Just seeking opinions please...

Body color will be (Fiat verde chiara, courtesy of the Moose in the photoshop thread...)

    recolor.jpg

Firewall/inner fenders will be Wimbledon white...

Engine, sbc, Corvette finned valve covers, tri-power aluminum intake...

Interior (if that plays a part)...

    20240101_160619.jpg

So...what color would you paint the block/heads?

    Body color. Same paint.

  3. Thanks, I thought about that too...but it kind of felt a bit reminiscent of the 90's era street rods which is why I was hesitating/looking for alternatves.

    Chevy orange...........
Imagine how well it will stand out when the hood is lifted. A good contrast to the body colour.

Dress the sbc to look like you pulled it out of a 'vette.

White , black or gray. Just my thoughts.
Any colors you don't want to paint it?

I would go 2-3 shades darker than body color or whatever color you think you may pinstripe it in. Maybe an ivory?

Maybe a deep bronze to match interior.
    Good accent color.

Paint the chevy motor black and keep the hood closed. Add a sprinkle of chrome here and there if it pleases you.
Ilike the exterior color, black roof and wheels. Should be a good looking ride.

  10. No way I’d go orange.

Shade of gray or green that complements the body color.

Chevy only had a couple decent engine colors.

red in 56 and the grey used on trucks.

A darker green would work nicely, kind of like the early olds rocket V8’s got. I would find a shade that is more obtainable locally though if you plan to drive it a lot and want to be able to touch it up though.

  12. If you are really good at upkeep, I am always amazed by how good the gold engines look.

I'd go a little lighter brown than the interior with black accents....

  14. Unless your racing it or never driving it, avoid white. Next to impossible to keep clean and a slight leak will stain and make it hard to keep looking good. I would go body color or a shade or two darker.

Gold dressed with a tasteful amount of chrome or polished aluminum is a classy look IMO. As Bob Ross would say "Don't over do...".

Olds Rocket 88 green would look good as would a brownish burgandy to compliment the interior.

And a vote from the other side:
Probably the lighting, but when looking at the top of the running board, I see blue.
I confess to liking green exteriors but I think either Stovebolt or
Ford Engine Blue, should carry well.
It is a Ford after all.
P.S. I have no prob with the origin of an engine.
As I have heard of some grousing about overexposure of Duntov's finest.

It won't look like a street rod unless you dress it up with 90s era accessories. Front fill intake, traditional valve covers and air cleaner, vintage appearing distributor, v belts... it'll look great.

Black is my go to engine colour. It matches the oil leaks.

    Any color you want.
The white firewall and inner fenders will isolate the motor from the exterior of the car.

You have a lot of different colors going on here. The light green exterior, the black top, the brown seats, the black interior door panel and interior metal, the white inner fenders and firewall under the hood, and now another color for the motor?

A casual looker may wonder what the color theme is for the car, are you trying to get a bit of every color in the world on the car? You still have the under side of the hood, the parts of the chassis that shows, and you can still add multiple colors of pin stripping to gain more color...

  22. Thanks @gene-koning ...Yeah, I'm not trying to give every color of the rainbow a seat at the table, but I hear what you're saying and thanks for the reply.

The door cards will be the same color as the seats, the interior tin will be the same as exterior body color, the chassis will be chassis black.

  23. Thanks all for taking the time to provide opinions...I appreciate it.

Wow Mark @Moriarity...not only gold, but Unicorn sparkles with race striping! That's a whole step or 2 up from the spray bombs at the local Napa store! Seriously though, I've seen pics of your engine in the maroon '40 and it definitely works and looks fantastic.

Body color, the original color the engine came with or the original color that the engine that the car left the factory with was. I'm not apposed to black but black engines in less than spotless cars always look dirty and greasy to me. Billy Bandit can carry off the black block bit but put a black engine in a car that doesn't get a Billy Bandit level of cleaning and care and pretty soon it is a sad looking engine.
I'm painting the block, head and pan of the 292 going into my 48 the original 48 gray aka blue gray that along with all the finned aluminum gets some onlookers to thinking that it is a modified 216 rather than a 292. It's going to be a 'If you know you know" thing.

Similar color scheme idea from an image I took many moons ago.

That said, I would be tempted to paint the engine Detroit Diesel Alpine Green. Still a GM color, vintage at that, and I think going to a darker shade from the body, along with the white inner fenders and chrome on the top end would look very nice.

If you're going to get it pinstriped, I always try to tie the engine in with that. I like to tie in with the interior, also, on my cars that aren't striped.

I had a buddy in Abilene, TX when I was going to school there, he drove a 64 GTO with a 389, tri-power that he left bare after machining. Looked like arse! I always made fun of him for that engine. Nice car. Nice engine. Shite finish work. No, paint and chrome don't make it faster but come on, a little pride man.
