Hot Rods Big Daddy's 55 2 door wagon gasser

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Lloyd's paint & glass, Jul 1, 2024.

  1. Back about 1961 I had a '55 Chevy stocker. Bought a "Duntov" cam from Chevy dealer, pulled the lifters and cam, slid the new cam in (after grinding the notch, flopped the lifters in, buttoned her up and took off. Still ran good when I sold it.

The manufacturer's aren't having a hard time with the lifters, they're having a hard time trying to figure out how to charge for the accepted standard while using inferior manufacturing techniques in third world countries, which leaves everything open to your basic Crap Shoot. I have noticed though, that the lifters with the oiling hole on the face of the lifter seem to be durable as hell, even when used with modern, low zinc oils, and the upcharge is not excessive for this feature either.

I feel your pain really sucks good money parts turn to shit.
If it’s any consolation there are ton of issues with factory installed roller lifters and cams in the big three manufacturers.

Johnson hy-lift. Howard's camshaft. Rotella T4 with a bottle of ZDDP additive. Who knows lol. I extended the exhaust all the way to the rear wheels, and then I could hear a noise. Big Andy got to the shop and I fired the car up. We agreed to run the valves, but after seeing the #2 intake, we knew it was fucked. I said I would just drive my pickup to Bowling Green, and Andy said hold up! We can start right now and fix it! So I started calling around. One of my friends had this erson 284 camshaft, and I had some good, lightly used lifters lol. Much smaller cam, but I'm here to tell you, it's probably pulls twice as hard from 3000-5000. Had Andy's son with me coming around the bypass, left the red light, laid into it in 2nd, and the ass end crossed the center line in 3rd. I'm happy. Headed out in the morning sometime, this is what hot rodding is all about! Good friends, thrashing on old cars. Big thanks @Truckdoctor Andy for kicking me in the ass! And busting your ass to help! My old lady and Andy's old lady went on a road trip to get the new cam. Anyways, love you fuckers.

Tell Andy to stop being so hard on the equipment.

    That’s what she said. :)

Big difference lol... sounds like.... well, it sounds like shit now. 218 @.050, 458 lift. But it's pulls much harder down low. Guess I can live with it for a little while.

  13. Hehehe, Enloe said hard on!!! This was fun, I haven’t thrashed on a Hot Rod like this in many years! Tomorrow will be great too!

This one, and the one in that Chevy truck i took to Bowling Green last year. Only 2 I've ever had do this. I think I'll switch to them LS engines, and then fancy roller lifters lmao!

He's in there on my couch, we enjoy being difficult sometimes. He also owes me a bag of McDonald's cheeseburgers. He lost a bet. But he climbed in there with me this evening, and put in some work! His son busted some ass too. I'd say 3 hours? We had a good time, dropped a few bad words also lol

A good thrashing is always healthy for the gear head soul.
