Hot Rods Halibrand QC in a '32.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris Haynes, Jun 8, 2025.

  1. I was thinking about putting a Halibrand QC in my '32. Is this a bolt in?

Depends on which QC is used, the stock location gas tank is the biggest issue.

Unless you want it to sit like a 4 wheel drive the rear crossmenber will need changed to probably to an A if your wanting a buggy spring rear. A Halibrand will require notching the gas tank while a Winters V8 rear will clear the tank by about an inch. You could use parallel leafs with a Winters but you'd still need to do something with the rear crossmember. Lots of options available.

As @krylon32 says the first thing required is an A cross-member and spring then a notched tank depends on which QC you end up with. I don't know if the 1" clearance that you get with the Winters version is enough to change the gear which are close to 1' wide. Someone with this set-up could comment on this.
In my 32 I am running a Halibrand Champ (301) which is much larger than the V8 (201) with A cross-member and spring, C-notched Chassis rails, a big notch in the tank (probably a US gallon less capacity) and a much modified trunk floor.

    Those are so plentiful too!

  8. As @swifty says, the A rear crossmember will require a good size slot in your trunk floor for the arch to protrude through. There used to be a stamped repro hump for Model A sedans that could be used to cover it all up.
It doesn’t necessarily need to be this big, but you get the idea.

@hotrodA pic shows it perfectly then in my case with the larger Champ QC I have another raised section nearly as wide as those U-bolts heading forward and tapering down to meet the floor

Hell Yes, those 57 rear ends are laying everywhere. I wished!

  11. Looks like I will have to pass on this idea. I won't butcher the frame, gas tank, or floor pan.

The way around the the spring hump is to run parallel leaf springs.

Ford nine inchers out of 57 passenger cars are still out there, it's the F100 housings that are pretty scarce.

You don't have to cut your floor, just graft the center of the model A cross member to the 32 and make it level with the frame rails. You also don't have to notch the gas tank, all you do is re drill the mounting holes about 1" back on the frame and shift the gas tank back. There are plenty of 32's out there like this. I am doing this right now to my 32 roadster. Don't make it difficult for your self.

  17. I know that is a famous restored car now. So, are you saying that by positioning the gas tank directly against the rear spreader bar, you gain enough room to clear the quick-change?

To move the gas tank back by an 1" or so you would have to remove the spreader bar. Also what rear spring is being used for the set-up?

I will post some pictures this weekend of my friends 32-3 window (he also help restore and put the quick change in tn Jim's 32 roadster in the above link). He is running the bigger Cook quick change with a model A spring in the 3 three window mated to Colombia ends and has a second gas tank in his trunk for long drives. It can be all done

  20. I look forward to the photos and if he had to lengthen the frame for remounting the spreader bar, or if the tank is right up against the spreader bar.
