Technical 2 skateboard wheels, a shaft collar, drill press and cutt off wheel walk into bar

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anthony myrick, Jun 24, 2025.

  1. probably the lowest level tech thread ever posted. I like the yo yo shift knobs. The thread @Moriarity has on em got by brain juice flowing
Ordered some cheap skateboard wheels and found a stainless shaft collar online.
    $10 for 4 wheels shipped.
    $8 collar plus shipping.
Was wondering what I could do with the limited stuff I have so I put a bolt thru a skateboard wheel and chucked it in my crappy drill press
    IMG_7029.jpeg
tried a few different cutting methods. A cutoff wheel worked the best.
    IMG_7030.jpeg IMG_7031.jpeg precession :)
Cleaned up with a file and sand paper IMG_7032.jpeg

    pretty freakin cool man....

  3. Thanks. The interior of the Merc is red with a white headliner. Should look ok

Needs polished. Thinking about clearing the wheels. Might hold up better

  4. The collar is technically 1.999 OD
The wheels are 2.047. According to the online info
The slight oversize kinda looks better than I thought it would. Used wet sand paper to roll it in at the cut.
My local hardware store only had 1/4 acorn nuts.
    5/16 would look better.

The stickers, something you printed? The surface is curved, how did they adhere without wrinkles?

  8. The skateboard wheels come that way

  10. The shaft collar IMG_6559.png There’s thick washers and spacers also online.
This was cheaper than buying a section of tubing.
Tube would be cheaper in the long run if making multiple.
Skateboard wheels can be bought in different diameters and lots of different colors

As a long time skateboarder I can attest that there are some pretty cool graphics on some of the wheels that would work great as a shifter knob.

Absolutely Awesome. Antony how wide is the collar? I had a Cal Custom on a 4 speed way back, wood I believe walnut.
Can I borrow/steal your design? The reason I ask is that I bought a B&M unishifter for my Dart project , it has a crappy plastic t handle with the B&M logo I’ve been thinking about what to replace it with. It’s 1/2” fine thread on the shifter. Your yo yo idea would be perfect.

You’d have to drill it. Comes 3/8 course

if he drills a hole for1/2” threads in something 9/16 wide and then taps it I am afraid it will break through or will have very little material on each side of the hole

  19. Might be ok on this. It’s thick

  20. One place listed 5/8 wide spacers. I’ll try to look
Granger says they can sell a 6” long piece of stainless tubing.
Not cost effective unless ya want to make a few of em

Thanks @Moriarity and @anthony myrick 5/8” would be better, I’ll look at Grainger and McMasters but 9/16 might be ok it’s an auto so I won’t be banging gears - Dang it!

As someone that’s skated for the past 40 something years glad to see others using wheels as shift knobs. I go the easy way(sorry cars no where near driving so bike will have to do):

Always run them with bearings in so you can spin them.
Graphics should be screen printed(no idea what those are since im a Spitfire lifer).
