Ralph Earnhardt took a well-deserved break on October 16, 1965, after working on the 1961 Ford Starliner he drove in the Charlotte 250 NASCAR Late Model Sportsman race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Earnhardt initially finished in second place but was awarded the victory when apparent winner Lee Roy Yarbrough was disqualified for using oversized wheels.​
