the 58 delray market.... if one of these pulled up in front of your house...Electrolux, kirby, or fuller brush salesman...
funny thing about this 58,... we have it setting out side to cure the paint... all day long people stop and come look at it... all say they can't believe how straight it is and how good it looks... get a lot of.. how much you want for it...I wanna buy it people... then tell them it's not for sale... and get the , when you get ready to sell it I'll buy it....I told my wife... they think they can buy it for 5k or 10 k cause it's in primer....I've got over 20k in it and it's not done.... and I don't really wanna sell it...so bad as it looks to most here... it's just right for me....
just so everyone knows.... this is not the first car i've ruined...So,... I had this idea... never seen it done... you know like putting 65 mustang tail lights on a car... but changing the tail lights on this 58, but like i've always said if you think of something, go to a so-cal car show and see what it looks like done... any way... wagon have one... impalas have 3... so I put 2 on my 58
the bezels will be black.....or chrome... if I go with new chrome bumpers and paint the car black, they'll stay chrome...did'nt want to ruin the tail lights yet...this is a real long term build that I'll probley end life before its done....I just wanna drive it..My arm will almost shift it without tears in my eyes...I've got a big list of cars that are closer to done that I'm also working on....feels good to see a little progress on the 58..
well, within a couple weeks she'll base/clear pure black... shining like a diamond in a goats ass... I try to block on it at least an hour every day... getting close..
I think it looks great with no chrome. It’s a “custom”, not a restoration. Can’t wait to see the gloss black…
the 37 is getting painted first.... still blocking the 58 and cleaning up the edges....probley ready for paint wed or thurs....the 37 will be black also...nice rust free car...lol
Question for the painters....Am I doing this right??? haven't paint cars for 30-40 years...found this 58... should have left it as is... but....went at it anyways... first thing, I stripped it... knowing it would set a long time....I rolled acrylic paint , paint primer for bare metal...it protects the metal. lasts 25 yrs and easy to do... that way I can work it or let it sit....
I then decided that I wanted to shave all the chrome, so welded up all the holes...I use nails for the holes.. they are galvanized and you don't have all the wire wiskers on the in side...
I then spent countless days slapping dents.most all were presser dents so not too bad.. right about then had surgery...
went to cars and coffee.....met this guy.... custom painter....we were sitting out on the patio.... he see's the 58, says why don't you just let me finish the body work and put some good Matrics primer....So the deal was... finish all the body work and block it to 80 grit, and just leave ot a satin finish car.... so I easy offed the paint and took iit to him to do....I'm a , I hate to pay some one to do what I can do myself guy.....so real hard..... but I did it....
the guy stripped the rest with a metal prep tool... what ever they call the barrel sander and did some lead work on a couple spots.... no bondo in this car...
so it gets done,.... I don't like it.....big flat area look ok... but the edges needed lots of work....so mo money..... now it's getting blocked with 220, and re primed to ready to paint prep primer......
so I get the car back... not happy because the fins are wavy.. so I shit brick them to straight...I go out and long board till my arm hurts so bad that I have to stop...I'm blocking with 320.... nice heavy primer. so it getting super straight....besides the fins... no metal shinners...I'm spending a ton of time detailing all the edges and hard to sand areas....you know.... the spots that will make or break the final paint... So now... found a guy with a booth that will squirt it.... I wanna take it to him detailed blocked in 320.... he's gonna final prime it and scuff it.... my guess is 600????.... it needs to be re primmed be cause of the spots that broke through...that and ,I don't know.... but I think the 320 scratches need to be filled ?????.... so question.... is this gonna work???? I think the primer will fill the 320 no problem.... can you shoot the base coat black and wet sand it??? and if there is issues re do the base coat... as in sand it an re squirt the base??? or does it have to be re primed..... it's going gloss black... and needs to be perfect.... sorry for asking how to do something I know nothing about, and should not be messing with....
