Yeah The guy that did this was partners with my Dad in the farm equipment dealership in the 70's. My Dad pulled out in the 80's but the business stayed open. This is what he started with.
Ummm. Is this the wrong timing cover for the motor? I am thinking the motor is a 59A 1946-48 as it has the 59 on the bell housing and one triangle and 2 round water holes. Shouldn't this have a 2 bolt distributor?
Still looking for an answer in the correct timing cover. In the meantime, had nothing better to do so I took the Holley apart. I have a rebuild kit for it after I clean it up.
It is great to see some one taking on a Low Budget Built which was the way in the old days seeing most of us then did not have squat to built as they do today
well for what it is worth I got the frame. it is rough, but we will see after I strip it more. I pulled it out as a favor for the woman down the street, so not like I am out anything.
That is a good looking frame....missing the frame horns but it looks like you got some cheater slicks to compensate... I count it as a score
The tongue mount for the hitch looks to be a kit that bolts on . A lot around here a welded on pieces of s**** metal.
...and a set of wheels I guess... and a chain so there is some value.. LOL I will start hitting some spots with oil and see what I can get off. spindles and everything brake related is shot. so maybe a brake rod spreader bar....if I put frame horns back on it.
Definitely a neat piece that I will try to save. I wonder if you could tow the car with it. I am sure flat towing is probably not advised, but in a breakdown situation...
I sprayed everything I could with blaster(out of Kroil but on order) so hopefully this weekend I can start getting it apart. it has acorn lug nuts so maybe the wheels will come off. I need to gather the rest of the parts may neighbor gave me with the pickup. about 6 rusty model A wheels, steering column, radiator, grill shell and gas tank. Plant to swap the wheels for the model a rims to make a roller....if it rolls. it was hard to tell when I grabbed it because tires are rotted.
a 50/50 mixture of diesel and automatic transmission fluid out of an old Plewis trigger pump oil can is what I use and the money saved buys ice cream....my thoughts...and this is why we aren't all chasing the same gal...
Well I got the back end of the frame up in the air and the wheels wont turn. I will strat braking it down to see it its the brakes locked up or if the rear is shot. Was going to change the gears anyway so just hoping for good axles and housings. Front spindles are hacked up but I have a set of 34's. Do they fit the A axle?
Starting to work through the 16 or so wheels that came with the model a pick-up and wood splitter. I might get some good ones out. Big black tub in the hot sun with water and half a gallon bottle of 911 concentrate. Any that are usable will probably sand blast the good ones
Not sure if I can salvage the Axle, but the wheels are good. Yeah its a cool trailer but wood is rotting off.
Got these "B" parts from 50 miles away so still staying "Local". So at this point it looks like a B drivetrain since I had a spare motor. Of course that has me rethinking whether to use the A frame.
just when you thought it was dead, the local build lives! I have a base now. 20 miles from my house, 1929 Phaeton. Complete car. Was a garage find, but only because the son couldn't stand seeing it rot in the barn and moved it to his garage. Last driven in 1973, this car was off the road longer than it was on. Was in the barn long enough rust through the rims. Was brought up from Brazil in the 50' or 60's. Short term is to sort it out and see what I have. I do have a 59AB being built that will end up in here if the banger is bad. Motor had oil and turned over by hand with compression till the valves stuck open. Lots of Farmer Fixes to work through.
I recall that our 'local' Model A club had a bunch of members get together and imported six or seven of these Phaetons from Brazil in the early '70s.... several of them got restored by the members that are long departed....cool find and appreciate the update and look at the addition to the local fleet
Not bad for 53 year parked. Motor turns over, the valves stuck open. A hodge podge of head bolts. Almost all of the studs came out when I went to take the nuts off.
The old girl definately wants to be saved. Gave up all the studs without a fight. Plan it to clean the valves and valve seats. Hit the surface rust in the ports and head and put it back together and try to run it. I will drain the oil today (yes it is still oil not mol***es so far). It has what looks like a loose front wheel bearing as it all wobbles. I am thinking htat took it off the road, not a motor issue. If the motor runs then I look at the transmission. hopefully it isn't full of rust. New fun farmer fix fact. I has 3 ford drums and one Lincoln. The hydraulic cylinder is where my battery was supposed to be. I think it is a single resevoir so not sure I will keep it anyway. They saved most of the manual brake parts.
