Technical FORD FLATHEAD Coil ====== Why do they look like that?

    Just wondering if there is some historical reason the Ford Fathead coils look the way they do. When did Ford start using normal ones?

    Only seen them in photos. What is the deal with the one in the center of my photo? There is a removable cap on top

    Bob, if by normal ones you mean like the typical coils with a round metal body the Model A used them. As for that cap I would guess it was an ease of manufacture thing or might just be something Henry wanted to try. As far as why they used them I would guess that being attached directly to the distributor would be at least partly to avoid the problem of a coil wire and possibly some protection from moisture

    Wonder if it was a way around some patent payment, and money lost on paying royalties on the four million model A's?
