Old Racing Boats (Black &White) video "Faster and Faster" Vintage Boat Racing Do***entary and Top Speed Record Attempts 1930-1950 - YouTube
GREAT thread!!! Wood-boats . . . are there any other kind? I'm an old fart. Grew-up water skiing behind our family yacht - Patrick - a sleek, all-mahogany runabout, outboard. I know there are some old pix around but couldn't find 'em just now. Dad was a bank manager all his life, but was also p***ionate about machines, engines and speed. All family vacations were spent on beautiful lakes and reservoirs, and when we lived in Stockton, we skied the c****s most every weekend. With him I attended boat drags on Lake Ming (near Bakersfield), and watched famed skier Bruce Peterson (think that was his name?) hold on through the traps behind the Hot Tomato. Ming was small and Bruce had trouble slowing and sinking before hitting the bank on the shutdown end. Dad and I attended regular drags and hardtop races. We were even spectators at the original Gold Cup races at Lake Tahoe. I'll never forget the rooster tails and sounds of those 200 mph, thousand-horsepower, 7000-pound monsters, powered by 12-cylinder Allison and Rolls Royce engines, flying by each other! Matter-factley, the Jul-Aug 2025 edition of Drivers Club magazine has a great article with fantastic pix about these legendary hydros, a few refurbished and still thrilling everyone involved - TODAY.
