That is the way it was back in the old days. You had that big stick welder and big rods to weld with. It was hard to weld that light tubing without looking that way.

I'd hang it upside down from my garage roof............. until I had collected the parts to build it up.

    Seriously cool!!

Very cool, looks to be the real deal.
I wouldn’t have the stones to drive it though, the idea of my nut sack resting on the rear end scares me.
The idea of hanging it from the rafters while collecting parts, as suggested above, sounds like a great idea.

Are you thinking of adding it to the collection for future use?

Appears to be an original Chassis Research by Scotty Fenn from the firewall back with partial hoop added to the original roll bar. The front half is of a later style rail that appears to be from the early sixties era. Would like to see it completed.

    Hello,

The chassis looks to be from the early 1960 era. A K-88 chassis, but over time and stronger rules, an added extended roll bar helped meet the safety rules of an organizing drag racing group. Or, a taller, newer owner still had to have the chassis before it got rusty and added to additional round roll bar to make driving it work.

Mickey Bryant wrote a great book on the outstanding history of the team of Adams, Scrima and Harris. In 1960 So Cal, Albertson Oldsmobile was racing a similar K-88 chassis. They were the top race car in So Cal for most of the year 1960.

At one time there was a 12 race top eliminator winning streak. They were in the pits and staging area in August 1960 for #13. But, never made it since the track was closing at 9:00 p.m. due to a fire down the dragstrip. The streak continued the following week.

In the months to follow, in 1960, a taller Tom McEwen was driving the K-88 chassis and had to have an addition to the original roll bar of the K-88. Similar to the safety additions added to this style of FED race car chassis. YRMV

Dave are you a ZZ Top fan?
The song Master of Sparks talks about riding in a steel sphere drug behind a car throwing sparks.? I’d make one with a few seats ha ha The Uber UBER cab company where your ride is an adventure.

Nope ZZ Top Master of sparks.

High class Slim came floating in
    Down from the county line
Just getting right on Saturday night
Riding with some friends of mine
They invited me to come and see
Just what was on their minds
And then I took my first long look
At the Master of Sparks on high
In the back of Jimmy's Mack
    Stood a round steel cage
    Welded into shape by Slim
    Made out of sucker gauge
How fine, they cried now with you inside
Strapped in there, safe and sound
I thought, my, oh, my, how the sparks will fly
If that thing ever hit the ground
Slim was so pleased when I had eased
    Into his trap of death
He had slammed the door, but I said no more
And I thought I'd breathed my last breath
We was out in the sticks down Highway 6
And the crowd was just about right
The speed was too, so out I flew
Like a stick of rolling dynamite
When I hit the ground, you could hear the sound
And see the sparks a country mile, ow
End over end, I began to spin
But the ball started running wild
But it was too late as I met my fate
And the ball started getting hot
But through the sparks and the flame
I knew that the claim of the Master of Sparks was gone

Back in the late 70's Dave, a buddy of mine, bought an old front engine dragster and a sketchy trailer to haul it. It was a pretty decent piece, but it had an old Ford rear axle. My buddy bought an axle set up for a FED from some guy who knew a guy. It was narrowed, I remember it had Strange axles and was very nice. He got it for a steal. He started making changes to make it fit the chassis and got an offer for the rear axle that was substantially more than he paid the axle and the FED. That stalled the project and it set in my pole barn for 3 or 4 years. He told another mutual buddy, Jack, that he could have it. One night Jack and I were having a few drinks after work with a few people and the subject of dragsters came up. One of the guys asked what he was ever going to do with it. One thing led to another and the price agreed was two cases of beer for the "owner" and two cases for me for storing it. I think Dave did help getting rid of the beer.
