Whenever I took my woody out for the first real drive last weekend the breaks had a spongy feel to them the closer I got to the house and my wife noticed that it was making a noise in the front whenever I was turning into the driveway. So I finally got around to looking and come to find out the pin either broke or the fastener came loose because it was missing. So I put the new parts in and deglazed the drum and put it back together. IMG_3531.jpeg

Stopped by this project this afternoon. Got the grille installed correctly and had the plates for the carburetors to mount them sideways. Worked on a list for fuel line fittings and trying to map out throttle linkage.

Good luck. I build mine standing on a 35 gallon gear oil barrel that has a hole cut in the lid.

    Thank you.
    My first crack at this.
We will see how it goes.
I was really intimidated, but I’m gaining more confidence as I go along.

Changed out the clutch pedal bushings on my 40 Ford, really made a big improvement. The old ones were pretty worn but the pedal and shaft were still good. IMG_3022.jpeg

  9. Lately when I first fire the Henry J I've been gettin some poping out the right pipe, get out on the road and hit a few rpms it clears up.
I do a lot of this around here, sitting in traffic, so I figure it's just a fouled plug.

    20250814_172532.jpg

The other day at a steady 3000 rpm I could still hear it, so a couple romps it cleared up again.
Today I pulled a plug to just see what story they had to tell, they said "you're choking me daddy-o !"
Early in the year I had dropped 2 numbers all around, today I dropped the primaries another 3 and cleaned the plugs off, I'll take it out tomorrow and see how it does.
Might be like a regular 2 Lane Blacktop moment around here, gotta check the jets !

Billy, those polished Mickey T's are beautiful.

  11. Billy, I have had to tune a bit with the crazy humidity we have had here for weeks. If you get in lots of traffic, maybe a hotter plug may be in order.

Well, things looked like they were going good, until I discovered this. IMG_4002.jpeg

Cracked rear servo housing caused by installing the servo out of sequence. Totally my screw up.
I don’t believe it can be saved, but boy oh boy did I learn a lot in the process.
I may look for a good used TH-400 case and swap parts or cut my losses and buy a pro rebuilt.
Remind me to tell you guys about the first time I tried to sweat copper water pipe.

Oh, a little JB Weld and/or duct tape and you're back in business.

If I had a case you'd be welcome to it. Sweetie is in Mokena right now celebrating her son's birthday.

I didn’t know if JB Weld would work, or are you just kidding?
I didn’t know if this was under high pressure or not.
Mokena city center is a great place for music, they have done a great job there.

@Robdski - sorry, man! But you're out there giving it the 'ol hot rod try. Actually doing it yourself instead of just checkbooking the project.

Randy - I see custom pushrods in there! Bet it's gonna run like a top on a single 2.

Huh! And I thought dropping a nut into the intake manifold on my '48 was bad:(. Project was to remove the old 94 and install the new 97. Pulling the intake seemed to be the only option. Recto-cranial inversion followed immediately by missing removing one bolt and breaking the intake manifold:mad:. Sometimes, wedges and long pry bars are NOT your friends:oops:.

    Oh this brings back memories…….:rolleyes::rolleyes:
I had a heater hose break on my wife’s OT Town Car with an 4.6. It runs under the intake so you have to pull it off which isn’t a huge deal but whenever you have cataracts and everything is a complete wash out blur so it sorta complicates things:p I tore the top side of the motor off and replaced the hose then put everything back together. It took 3 days to do a 6 hour job because I couldn’t see a damn thing. My dad came over and inspected the job and made sure I had no loose ends and whenever I fired it up it made one hell of a rattle in one of the cylinders and before I could shut it off it stopped. Cranked it up again and ran fine until it started smoking like a freight train. Come to find out part of the intake gasket which was hard plastic fell into the cylinder and it either punched a hole in the piston or it gummed up the cylinder walls and ruined the rings. Either way I destroyed a nice low mileage 4.6 because I always work on all of my cars and never send them to a mechanic.:oops:

I can honestly say, as a non-mechanic, I wasn’t trying to take money away from the trans guy, I just wanted to give it a try, to learn something, for my own benefit.
For you guy’s that have the knowledge and talent to do this for a living, I have a new found respect.
Thanks to everyone for the kind words, it was a learning experience. I’ll take the loss and move forward.

  27. Alan, I gave you a like because I’ve done that kind of thing too and feel for you. Not because it happened. I’m looking forward to seeing you again at LF-3!
