1937 ford 3 speed top loader. Is this ring spacer supposed to go on this part of the shaft, up on the shoulder to the right or is it even supposed to be there? The unit was in pieces when i bought it.
Without getting into my manual with exploded view I'd only be guessing the answer, but I do know that ring is an internal part in some of them depending on the model of trans.
Some of the manuals show it and some dont. Its part 7063 but i dont have a detailed enough drawing to show location. It was late '39 when they started putting the c clips in.
Not knowing for sure but that ring wouldn't be a spacer. And it doesn't look like it has a groove to seat in at that location.
https://southsideobsolete.com/#trans Is this diagram good enough? And VanPelt shows a pic in their parts list that looks just like yours. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/trans-partsprices-pg1.htm
Thats the one causing me the confusion. If i leave that spacer where i currently have it then the snap ring on the rear case bearing sits 1/8" away from the back of the case. If i move the spacer up onto the shoulder then the snap ring fits tight againt the back of the case like i think it should.
The shaft obviously shows the wear of the old roller bearing. Hold the new one up and see if it lands in the same spot with the spacer in there. There are two different length roller bearings aren’t there? Are you using the correct one?
I just checked the VanPelt site and it shows you should be using bearing 7118 there, not the longer 7121. Did you put the long one in there next to the spacer by mistake?
Rocky Cline; I'm just an Old guy that past his 75th birthday several years ago. I've learned Not to tell people what to do and if I give advice it's based on personal experience and I'm still very careful how I say things,, But! You need this Book! It's the best information you can get today and it has illustrations for the full series of 32-48 gear boxes out there. The information you'll get here is piece work and may or may not be correct for the Box you're working on but correct for the one from the person that gave it to you. Case and point, here's the "spacer" in place you asked about and another helper says it's not a spacer. Now, the incorrect info part is Not why I say you need this book, it's because just putting everything back where it belongs won't correct the issue it had that made it come apart to start with. There are specs and tolerances that are critical to a usable Trans. If you don't know what those are you will have the Gear Box back out in short order after first drive. Not fun at all if you're running closed drive. I have 2 of Mac's books, one for in the Office to be used only with clean hands and the other sits on my Toolbox while building. That one has tons of oily fingerprints all through it and is difficult to read some of the print. Even though I have done countless early boxes I would never try to just stick one together free lance. Also Mac has everything you need to do a good job while you're at it.
