Technical Speedway Pressure plate problems

  1. I am working on a project that I nearly finished 8 years ago but life got busy and I am finally back to it. It had a rebuilt 8cm with kind of a mystery year 3 speed. At the time I bought a new 9" pressure plate and clutch from speedway and installed them. Trying to test drive it now I notice the throw out bearing can barely touch the fingers when it's fully pressed. You can see i have one photo fully pressed and one foot off clutch. What can I do? Do I need to pull the motor and trans? Is there a work around I can do? Thank you for your time!

  2. Several questions

    Did/have you adjusted the clutch linkage and free play?

    Was the flywheel resurfaced?

    Did you replace the throw out bearing and spring? (They look used.)

    Did you replace the throw out bearing fork?
     
  3. When I was tinkering with it today I disconnected the clutch linkage and used a wrench to get the full range of the fork, and that's what you see in the picture.

    The fork, bearing and spring were not replaced. Unfortunately I cannot remember if the flywheel was resurfaced.
     
  4. I will also note that this exact engine and trans combo was in the car when I picked it up.

    Is the fork in the correct orientation and is it clocked correctly on the clutch shaft?
     
  6. Sorry I don't know, pretty much the whole transmission got pulled out of the car as is and put back in as is.

    2 possible problems. My customers call a lot with the type of problem your having which is normally an adjustment problem if everything was assembled correctly. Another is the source of the parts.

  10. Thank you, I was playing with the pressure plate finger adjuster and it did not seem like they could come forward any more. Would it likely be the fork could be adjusted forward? How close should the bearing be to the fingers with the clutch at rest?

    I have recommended 3/16 to a 1/4 with my T5 kits but stock Ford may be different?

    Are you running a long style of pressure plate like this? The fingers come out closer to the throw out bearing.

    If you are referring to the three bolts on the top of the clutch cover (the sheet metal stamping) those are not adjusters, they hold yokes that the fingers pivot on. You could loosen the yokes and place shims between the yoke and cover to lower the fingers or mill the yokes to raise the fingers but for sure milling the yokes will be a major operation requiring complete disassembly of the pp.
    I think your clutch disc may be too thick for how that pp was built, a thinner disc would raise the fingers.

    That’s what I was thinking, too thick of disk.
