I used to hear stories about how some guys back in the mid 50s used to take things like the headlights & taillights out of the cars before the races, and reinstall them after the races, so they could drive the car back home after the races.
It doesn't appear that many of these guys will be driving them back home after this race.
That number 50 doesn't even look like it has a roll cage in it! By the looks of the other cars, that probably was not a very smart move, if he didn't have the roll cage with that bunch.

  24. Hotrod from Victoria Australia . The red P plate above the license plate means driver is Probationary driver. One on the rear as well. He/she has a full driving licence but its to let other drivers know there's a newbie behind the wheel.( or a hoodlum who had to start again  ) System started in 1966 in N.S.W. and 1969 in Vic. In the first few years lots of new drivers did'nt mount the red P and so could expect a on the spot fine from the cops. Later years there were more implications if you "forgot"the red P.

So, do they still do the red "P" thing?
How long were you required to display the red "P" tag?

The car I drove during the first year I had my license was dad's go to work car, he still used it a lot more then I did. Would that car have required the red "P" as well?

  26. I believe they now have a red P and a follow up green P ( bureaucracy  ) . You would drive your first year with the red P in any car you wanted to. Dads car in the morning, Mums car in the evening, you put the P on. Your Mum/Dad would remove the red P whenever they were behind the wheel. If you drove the red P had to go on again. Like i said, lots of young first year drivers "forgot"

I'm pretty sure and if my memories are correct, in NSW where I was born, the driving age back then was 16 and 9 months. You got your learner tag/plate then, and after 3 months you would go onto your P plate. You had them for 12 months and you would become a full licensed driver after. Whenever you went out with your P plate you were cop bait, lol, in Sydney anyways. Cheers

  29. I got my driving licence in Victoria in 1971. Learning started at 17, you had to be 18 years old to do your driving exam. You did'nt need a driving school or double pedals. You went to the cop-shop and a cop went with you for the driving exam . If you passed only then did you display the red P for the first year. With the red P you could drive alone or with passengers. No cop bait if you "forgot" your P plate and drove like grandma in town.
