hope this thread turns to" vapor or locked.."--.BUT kind of wonder if he is unhappy w/ pump---and takes it back-- will he have to stand in the return line---and will it be small or big enough?
It never got stoichiometric. The usual volume and flow of ideas and knowledge were jetted down rather quickly. It was as if the OP was running on fumes when he pulled in. We never got to see a regular question get the premium answers as usual.
My apologies to all of you that I offended, that was not my intention. I’m not too good at putting my thoughts into writing, I’m much more oriented to speaking to people one on one. As I said, I’m in a very difficult situation due to my aunt and uncle. They live 200 miles away from me and between running back and forth and at times staying in their basement it’s wrecked my schedule (well, my whole life really). We have a big trip planned for a week from now that I have been planning for and working towards for the last year. My prep time has been pretty much eliminated and there is also a good chance I will have to cancel due to their never ending crisis’s. Any, I’m sorry, I did order the Delphi pump (I’m calling it a Delphi pump based on the picture, I couldn’t find an actual Delphi pump).
No need to apologize, I hope your trip goes well, all things considered. I enjoy car time to decompress and I hope you will be able to get back to some sort of order in your life and enjoy your hot rod.
If/when you get the time, would you post the reg & how it's set-up? Or is it in some current thread? Always looking to see how folks solve problems. Hope things get better for you soon - they will eventually. BTDT, more than once. It does take its' toll. ;( . &, although it may not seem like it(now) - some of the response on here are really good humor. Even if not originally intended as such. . Marcus...
I sincerely hope things turn around for you. Keep your head up and keep pushing forward. If you’re doing the right thing by your family, then good will come back to you in some way at some point. Everyone may not agree with me on that, but that’s what I’ve experienced over the years.
FYI - The GM/Delco/Delphi pump looks exactly the same as the ones from Amazon and Ebay that are made in China that sell for under $20. I looked at every GM/Delco/Delphi pump I saw listed for sale, and not one said where it was manufactured, so I suspect they are not made in the US. They usually cost about $100 or more, and if they were made here, I'm pretty sure they would be advertising it as so. I don't trust them to not buy pumps made in China and mark them up. Look at the box when you get it, because I think they have to put the country of origin on there. I did find a "Genuine" Delphi FD0031 on Rock Auto for $64.89, but the "Fuel Type" was listed as "Diesel", and it didn't say where it was made either. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1112692 Rock Auto also has the AC Delco pump for $135.99, but again no place of manufacture, or fuel type listed. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=13082317&cc=0&pt=6256&jsn=11 Under the GM part number, Rock Auto has more listed from $14.91 to $112.79, none say where they are made, and a few list the fuel type as "diesel." https://www.rockauto.com/en/partsearch/?partnum=25117340 I also have a '40 Ford coupe running a DeSoto 291 Hemi, that had an Edelbrock pump mounted by the tank. It was working fine, but while removing the tank in search of a gas leak I discovered that the nylon bodied Edelbrock pump has a pressed in brass inlet and outlet. When I was removing the rubber fuel line, that fitting pulled right out of the pump with ease. That didn't seem like a good thing to me, and I needed a pump right away, so I put in a Ebay $20 "Made in China" 12 volt 5-9 PSI pump. So far it's been working fine, but I do carry a spare just in case, and it's easy to get at to change it. I can hear it upon start-up, but not on the road. Here's one from Amazon for $18.99, and it comes with a mounting bracket and fuel filter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZNS6WQR/?tag=atomicindus08-20 I have also been using 6 volt "Made in China" versions in my flathead powered cars for years as a booster/prime pump to help them start much easier, or when I sense have vapor lock coming on. I have a lighted toggle switch under the dash that I flip on when I need it. The lighted switch is to remind me to shut it off when I don't need it. Here's the 6 volt 2.5-4 PSI version from Ebay for $18.99. You can also find the 6 volt 5-9 PSI version there, too. https://www.ebay.com/itm/376390229649?_skw=6+volt+universal+fuel+pump&itmmeta=01K4682MCPZ94F14XYYXK7DSDA&hash=item57a29b1e91:g1AAAeSwRndobKw9&itmprp=enc:AQAKAAAA4FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1d5XzU9SJs2wRtSQ3XXzKp8P9J3QLSF3c36NNfcnra2YjItjCm+nZ5b6sbtqXDRFAOGhNvy4cp44V+GBOa5aZF72S3DcolIoq5UR5EDct2dPbwfmjYJOLWGBqcyRG2RDi5P6GbbX0SBnK1oRnDKFPhbX1OVrARsjxugVxaeZ8ITi4YYjpRr7ww/KDGjY/yu8qrHlezlZZwKRvrLqwmGuRNhQK/7VwGSGpq96ozVzwfMxgom3oXrbBk7J3OpO1hbeapi/mikuBZ1JywHZ8UzFu/D|tkp:Bk9SR77GisihZg&pfm=1
Facet Brand fuel pumps. Aviation , Good Quality , from 1 psi Up to high psi , Would have to shop prices $45 to "Expensive"
I waited seeing this thread cause I would want to hear a good recommendation if ( when ) I get to run the flathead in my garage ( don't let me call it a 'shop' ) Glad for the input. Sad for the strife. Three things to stress. *Always glad to see @squirrel with the ask of details and / or pics. Helps us and the guy who just signed on get to the meat of an answer. *You my friend are no stranger here, in fact when I began posting, after years plus lurking,,, you were first to set me in my place. By knowing what's up. Of which I was glad for the honesty. *Dealing with Physical Pain is how men get to be men. BUT having to feel others pains that can't be touched or even understood is just not within our makeup. We can use words We can give time and money, but the injustice of another's misfortune will always leave us wanting to have some of / more control. Excuseing the blowout,.just stay ( hang ) and share what you like
As a reference for anyone that doesn’t know about it. I like to use the online delco parts catalog. Decent specification listings, parts look up, vehicle fitment listing. https://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/acesCat.php
Always respect Jim’s insight, learned a lot from him and others here. If he’s ever over in my area, I’d gladly make the time to hang out, same with mark. I should have took the time to track mark down I was in Indiana a few times with for the custom car revival. Especially when he was at the Springfield swap meet.
I bought a pump off of EBay in a moment of day dreaming I guess. The pump looks like the Delphi pump in question but no way to know for certain if they are all the same or not. Later I realized that it only said “diesel”, darn it. I looked up the part under Chevrolet 3500 as suggested but the gas motor does not show the pump. I have no idea if it will work for certain with gas and not knowing what’s inside I don’t know what might fail if it’s not suitable for gas. Bugger
@'28 RPU Friendly advice when buying On ebay & other places , Many seller's are copy & pasting information & pictures. & have No Clue what they are selling . You need to read add / listing thoroughly. Especially """ About this Item """ To make sure you are getting what you think you are buying Authentic brand & Part Part # Pic below are just a Example , Not a Fuel pump , & My self , I have Not taken apart a fuel pump thats Used for both Diesel and Gasoline to see what the differences between the two fuels . To compare to a pump that Mark just for gas or diesel made by the same company. I have a few pumps made by same Brand , Look same , Different part numbers , Mr Gasket Brand One market Diesel and Gas Then another says Diesel Then another says Gas Maybe some one Else will chime in that's actually had pumps apart , I would think One might be Seals .
Maybe there's some aspect of returns I'm not aware of, but I'm pretty sure you don't want to have any limitation in the return line like a needle valve. If you restrict the return flow, it's got to go somewhere instead of the tank, and the only options are to strain the pump or push the extra into the carb. I think the few bubbles that make it into the carb on startup would simply go to the top of the bowl, which is vented. Again, if someone wants to correct me, Ive been wrong before, I'll be wrong again, just ask my wife. -rick
@69fury , I might be confused on how @28rpu pluming On outlet drain as return , I have done things Like this , (my unusual thinking) I have used the drain plug , made a fitting with a stem / straw so the return goes High threw gas / liquid to top tank then J or L to dump in tank so not fighting Liquid gravity , & used different size restrictors / jets to control my PSI To be steady / consistent @ return & @ in this case Carb ,
Do not know if you read pass maybe the first 5 post or so , The way I read / uder stood Other post further the Op apologized for those Few responses / post .
Why bother posting here if you don't have anything constructive to offer. If the OP pissed you off, just do nothing and keep scrolling. The HAMB isn't Facebook.
