    TODAAYS THE DAAAY

This afternoon its time to load up and haul ass down to Camargo Kentucky in a rusty, crusty, leaky, squeaky, loud and proud sedan that Ive never driven more than 40 minutes from home... at least if i break down I'll look cool on the side of the road.

it run mostly well, its oil leaks are kind of resolved, it gets 13 miles per gallon average if i beat on it, betting itll do better cruising at 60-65 the whole way with relaxed shifting pattern.

i have two gallons of oil so Im not super worried about running out since i fixed the major leaks, a gallon of 50/50 coolant, brake fluid, and a half bottle of gear oil.

i have several sets of points, a rad cap, two belts, and an entire toolkit.

this thread is to monitor where i am roughly if i break down, get stranded, get in a wreck, or a plethora of other possibilities. Aswell as to beg for help from local hambers if i cant fix it myself.

I will be leaving at roughly 1:30pm from Newark Ohio and heading towards Ironton Ohio, where i will do my "final checkup" on the car at my grandpas house before heading into Kentucky, im betting the points will need adjusted as Im coming up at 1500 miles on them

yeah I know the event started today, better late than never!

side note: posts while on the road will be made by my wonderful copilot.

5 hours, 48 minutes, 260 miles. i plotted out every gas station with e0 available "just in case" thanks to pure-gas.org. if the tank is still full or im not having issues im going to pass the station and keep driving. i should avoid most 70 mph interstates with this route, there's still a couple on there, just gonna cruise the right lane at 65.

if the oil losses/consumption continues at its current rate i should use about a gallon for the trip.

wonder if this much planning was needed back when these cars were new.

Just remember the number one rule, "What's behind us doesn't matter"

  6. Never heard it said quiet that way, but, yeah. I set my 1950 Buick CC at about 62-65 and stay in the right lane.. Usually pass a few.
    Enjoy, y'all.

    You've got this, cat!
If you have one, an infrared temp gun is handy too. I've always felt the hubs and tires on my trailers by hand, but they are cheap, light and small.
BTW, just like mountain climbing, it's not just the ascent, but getting back down safe too.
Say HI to everyone for those of us that are too busy, too far or too chicken to drive out. :D

  9. my girlfriend has one i will be borrowing. i brought the big adjustable wrench "just in case" i need to adjust my front wheel bearings at all. they are set but murphys law applies.

“It's 260 miles to Camargo, we got a full tank of gas, 2 gallons of oil, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. Hit it."
    Road trip Sounds fun!

When those cars were new, there were a lot more service stations along the routes. New cars tended to not leak and be dependable. Old cars have always needed to be coaxed along and kept track of. @squirrel has awakened a number of old sitting cars and goes on adventures.

Mt grandfather had a 48. He carried many spares in the trunk and had a tool set, even when the car was only 10-15 years old. That wasn't common, but just how he rolled.

  12. i love the blues brothers, now youre gonna make me listen to blues on the way down!

  13. i always forget about service stations actually servicing things and not just being used for display. its so foreign to me.

Your road trip brings back memories of my youth, more than one of my friends cars would require filling up the oil and checking the gasoline at the full service stations. We were fearless we would drive our old beaters any where anytime and in any weather. Fun days indeed.

Relax, just make sure it doesn't run out of oil or water, and enjoy the drive! If you put a tiny dab of grease on the part of the points that contacts the cam, they should last just fine.

Wish I could be there, but I'm heading by south of there next week for Drag Week. Bad timing.

  17. i am a big fan of blues, theyre all in my streaming library aswell as my cd and vinyl collection.
final check prior to leaving. heading out early. 20250905_114806.jpg 20250905_115021.jpg

If you still have the original dimmer switch....because you never ever should get rid of any original parts of an old car...use it instead, they just take 50 or 100 presses to get working again. btdt on many cars.

  21. the old one was frozen solid and unfortunately never freed up, its still around home somewhere but i didnt have much luck before.
