Nice job! You solved problems while on the run.

My brother had a junk '67 Impala he bought around 1979 for junk money. He gave it a no-parts tune up (just cleaned everything) and we went to Buffalo NY to visit a friend in college. Zero issues outside of adding a quart of oil.

I had a '65 Chevy wagon I took everywhere. I was on disability with my knee injury, why not follow the DIRT modified scene in 1981? The car was pretty good except for a balky starter and getting the Muncie hung up in 2 gears... I always made it home.

  4. oh so the coil is actually a transformer in a way never thought of it as one. neat.

thank you all for the wonderful stories and congratulations, theres so many its hard to reply to each of them personally. but i enjoyed reading every one.

Might check the timing chain and gear. If the timing retarded suddenly for no known reason, the gear may be shedding its plastic teeth. Typically it won’t run very well, or more likely at all when that happens, though.

Yeah, having my share of beaters, it could have jumped a tooth, but more likely that the points wore or slipped.
Once Cat gets back to opening the hood, we can talk him through checking the chain by rotating the crank and watching/feeling the dist. rotor. Another good skill to have when checking used engines.

  7. timing was retarded due to me being retarded and using too long of a screw to replace the dropped one, then jumping the starter. shortening it, then it wouldnt run worth a damn under 900 rpm i figured the flyweights just bumped into it, didnt think the entire housing would turn.

hey at least the once stuck distributor isnt stuck anymore!

side note: iirc y blocks are steel tooth top and bottom, no nylon.

  8. also, most recent pic of the car lol. 20250907_191237.jpg

even the camera got covered in coolant.

this is immediately following the first time i advanced it not far enough.

Just went back and read through your 'vair thread. Good stuff.

On this, clean off the coolant as best as you can now while it's still warm.
Hit up the local dollar (2 Dollar?) store for nook and cranny brushes and some cleaner. No need to dig into it trying to fix stuff and constantly get sticky. Give 'er some love, she got you there and back, even if it was a 'learning experience'.
Speaking of temp changes coming, if it's just water in there now, fix that before the first cold snap.

Welcome to the family buddy :D anything you need, don't hesitate to ask.

  13. Yup...roadtrips in hot rods/old cars are the best adventures. Roadside repairs make for some of the best stories and make the trip much more memorable years from now. It's amazing how our ears seem to hear these old cars making more noise as they start heading back to the barn...but a couple days later that noise seems to return to "normal" (whatever that is?). Great trip for you and your gal pal...good on the both of you.

And, thanks for bringing the rest of us along.

  14. gf said she loves the bottle of crown melissa gave her lol.

thank you for the advise, luckily it looks like a lot of it can be hosed off when the engine is cold. whatever is left has already evaporated and turned to dust from heat.

turns out one of my exhaust leaks was actually a loose spark plug! when i tightened them up after doing a pre check on the plugs apparently i missed one. oops.

  15. I guess we forgot to tell the new Guy he has to buy pizza at the next Lloydfest! :D

Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. For many of us, it was a reminder of our earlier adventures where roadside patch it jobs were required to get back home.

The trophy you won was just testing to be sure the right guy received it. Congrats, you have earned it.
As mentioned above, if you added pure water after the over heating, don't forget to bring the antifreeze level back up to where is should be, before the car sees the first freeze.

The road side fix accomplishes 3 things for you.
    1) It builds your confidence that you can do it.
    2) It makes things easier for the next roadside repair because you have already concurred one.
    3) It gives your passenger more confidence knowing that you, and your old car did get her back home.

Good job! May your next road adventure be as much fun as you had on this one.

You are a cop. You are cruising the highway, looking for offenses. You smell oil in the air and up ahead are a set of dim tail lights you've never seen before. As you catch up, there is some old thing rolling along that looks like it just escaped a wrecking yard from 50 years ago, or a time traveler. You notice they've got one headlight out, but the plates are current and they are obeying the speed. You keep an eye on them, but realize that they are behaving. If you pull them over, it's going to take a lot of effort to write it up, between what is going on and how old it is and the laws of the time. Anyone that has got that bucket of bolts up and running but still that rusty is not going to just roll over and pay the fine, which means you have to go to court a couple times. You make sure they aren't a hazard to themselves and others, then go look for easier prey. Maybe an old car from this century.

When we were young, we'd have got written up for a dozen things, for driving the same car in the same condition....times have changed!

but just wait till you get old, and respectable, they will never pull you over now matter how bad it looks. btdt.

I seemed to attract them HARD from 20-25. One night I was driving the GF's car. Middle lane of a wide street, pulled up to a light. Corner was a 7-11 and a cop backing out. Told her "Watch, he's going to pull out right behind me". She scoffed, saying he can't see me, it's not my car, I'm not doing anything just sitting there. Sure as $@&#, he went to some effort to pull out and swing in right behind. Followed for 4 blocks.

Turns out the Blues Brothers movie was a fairly accurate prediction of what was to come.

That old Y Block trailing a light oil fog smell will do that. Besides killing mosquitoes, it hurries the cops to pull around you and keep going.
