I like vintage pics like this...those flat trailer fenders made it onto a number of Hotrods...I wonder if it was because it was easier and perhaps more visually pleasing to cover the wider rear ends using these over the oem style fenders...most seemed to be mounted from struts attached to the backing plate like cycle fronts...looks to be a winter scene in the show to cool off the summer heat a little too...

    Hello,

It is not everyday that one sees a flatbed truck as a hot rod or modified old car. From the looks of the bed floor, it has been in use for all sorts of moving of parts, boxes, crates and whatever else can be placed back behind secured bed rails.

The stake bed helps for larger items. But, the daily driving of such a truck is difficult with it fully loaded or when a heavy load is necessary, like two desert racing motorcycles, a heavy tool box and spare parts for a weekend race day in the So Cal deserts.

    A 38 Chevy stake bed truck? upload_2025-9-9_2-47-7.png
The local old vintage Chevy parts company has a bevy of old Chevy trucks with one in particular as a stake bed truck. So, they do get used as work horses.

But, the one my wife saw one day we were out looking for a shop in a different industrial building area was an eye opener. A 32 Ford stake bed truck that was a flat bed truck at the time we first saw it. It had cool Moon Racing Discs and a great stance, with an empty bed.
    upload_2025-9-9_2-47-56.png
The stance was evident from a block away. My wife saw it first and pointed it out as we approached the various industrial buildings and small shops.
    upload_2025-9-9_2-48-52.png
The flatbed was empty of the side stakes, but was ready to haul heavy stuff as we noticed the particulars for such a load in the back.
    upload_2025-9-9_2-49-28.png
We knew the stake bed truck was a coastal hot rod build and that we would see it again. So, I took out my digital camera and took one last parting shot…
    upload_2025-9-9_2-50-14.png

    Note:

Then a week or so later, as we were driving around in a different city and different style of industrial area, we came across the same 32 Ford Truck with a surprising load. A full stake bed and heavy load secured by nylon straps. So, it does get used as a heavy load carrier…
    upload_2025-9-9_2-51-16.png
But, the final time we saw the 32 Ford Stake Bed Truck was when we were in an area with some traffic and my wife only had time to stick out her camera phone and shoot the same stake bed truck with the most unusual load in the back. What looked like a quarter midget race car in a Tahitian Red or Dark Red color all tied down in the back bed area. But, for my wife, a huge SUV was behind us and it made her nervous about taking more photos. YRMV

    The "Gauntt Coupe
    https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=The+"Gauntt+Coupe

Built at Troy Ladd"s Hollywood Hotrods...no doubt involving the craftsmanship of @cretin and his team...this shop would be at the level of the high bar Indy level builders of the yesteryear...nothing rough around the edges...while it may be modern Troy reaches back with so many of the projects they undertake...

Nice Hotrod...I'm noting the Winterfront Grille...I'm pretty sure that is the correct one for 29...I'm surprised they didn't shape them to flow with the shell like the 32 but I guess it was an evolving thing with appearances...I suppose that one shown may have been a multi fit as well and really it doesn't look too bad either...

@Stogy in regards to winter front the A grill shell doesn’t have an insert or the depth a 32 has. I would assume that’s the reason for an exterior shutter set up for the A

That's what I thought too. I'll see if I can find some info...they actually are taller and narrower and that's a pretty distinctive valve cover

I remember in @Rockerhead's Thread on the Dry Lakes Hotrods he did a what is it and it was one of these... @JimmyB got it...I never forgot that little contest though...

I believe this predates or was built in unison with the Flathead Cad engines...

Speaking of the Late Hamber @Rockerhead this was the first image in his epic Thread...I just seen another image of it I will share when I find it...it's a 1927 Chevrolet with some pretty cool Jalopyizing of other brand details...it was a looker

    FB_IMG_1759371503136.jpg

    Quoted text below...
"J. Allen Hawkins was a Pasadena legend who made a name for himself with his early hot rods, and later his photographic career. Here is his 1925 Chevy phaeton with a modified Ford 4-cylinder engine in front of his shop. The grille shell is from a 1934 Ford, and he trimmed the fenders, installed more modern headlights and "flipper" hubcaps. Later he would be known for his 1932 Ford cabriolet, which he drove to his many photo sites. His daughter Cherie Hawkins has found and saved many of his negatives, and this photo is from her treasure trove."

I will add Al Hawkins went on and kept involved in go fast running a Speed Shop and more...he left us in the mid 80s...

I was wondering that as well, but seeing all the plug wires in the orig pic you posted, it seemed too many for a 6-cyl.

Thanks for info. Did not see angle of “V” but accept V12 caddie, narrow angle, side intake, less then 11,000 made 1930-1937. Of New one for me. Tks again

Always amazed to see how the crowd dressed at the old car shows. We have become such slobs.
