Reminds me of those vagabond travelogue adventures with Firestone and Ford and Edison out camping, exploring our country in the 1930's. The wires are a bit fine for off roading, like wading into the river with brogue wingtips.

No time for fishing if you’re busy building hot rods.

I’ve never in a zillion years thought: “This hot rod would look killer with a canoe strapped to the roof on a specially fabricated rack.”

I did a lot of fishing when I was younger, and built and drove a few hot rods, too, While I thoroughly enjoyed both, I see no commonality between the two pastimes.

Well, except a need for patience.

A surf board maybe, but not a boat on the roof.

My 48 won't tow my Bayliner but it will tow my 8 ft Car topper on a small trailer down to a popular salmon fishing site.

At my age I long ago figured out that the most boring people around are those who only have one all consuming interest or hobby. You have to be up for doing a few other things rather than just hot rods or custom cars or race cars or you will alway be that most boring s o b in the room just as you see that guy who only talks about hunting or that guy who only wants to talk about football, or Baseball or Basket ball or that guy who only talks about hunting.

Just like my hotrod or my truck my boats are a reason to go someplace fun and do some fun things. Catching dinner isn't all that bad either.

How about being under water in your hotrod or project car, I’m sure it happens all the time.

I always thought fishing was for guys that want to sit around and relax………
I thought hot rodders were the opposite, guys that can’t sit still ………:)

Maybe this guy is trying to combine the two. Was seen driving down road with occupants wearing life jackets.

I rather go fishing thru a box at a swap meet. Some vendors bait you with shiney stuff but you gotta cast off and look deeper. If you look too long you might get reeled in by something else. Sometimes you might get hooked by a part you weren't looking for. And from the other side of the table you have to have all the right lures ready. They're not old parts n trinkets, that's a tackle box with a table and chair as a fishing boat. Sometimes you gotta be quiet, but other times you're better on the fly, casting a good joke, bobbing some folklore and wives tales, or delivering time honored car guy cliché now n then. And also like fishing, you gotta get the new catch home and clean it up before it's ready to serve and hope it's not full of worms:confused:

I quit fishing when Game Wardens needed handguns to fill out a citation for -to short of fish. Safer under the hood.

Fishing for our family started when our dad was a little kid in Terminal Island and San Pedro. He learned all there is to learn from his friends and families that were involved in the fishing fleet in Terminal Island. But, for us, it started in 1946 when we moved to So Cal from Northern California. Our dad's 41 Buick Fastback was the first car I noticed and liked. Today, it would be a cool hot rod sedan with an SBC motor + A/C.

The lineup of our dad's cars we grew up with in the Westside of Long Beach.
    upload_2025-9-14_9-19-14.png
Every 4-5 years, he had this thing that told him to get a new car. So he saved after purchasing a new car, ready for the next car in 4-5 years. We never got one of his old cars, although the 63 Buick Riviera was one of his best choices and was a total road machine... Yes, I drove that green Buick all over our cruising area with the A/C on and had a blast.

    Hello,

Our dad used his line up of Buick sedans to go fishing all along the So Cal coastline from Pismo Beach down to Baja Mexico. It was primarily surf fishing from the shoreline or rocky coastlines. But, during those times, he also went to the Mammoth Mountain Lakes, Crowley Lake nearby and all of the local San Bernardino Mountain Lakes. So, needless to say, he was an avid fisherman. My brother and I always went with him along the shorelines of So Cal. We loved the ocean and we played, while our dad fished. Sometimes, we, too would cast out a sinker and hook to try our luck.

As far as using our family sedans that could have been hot rod/custom car starters, they got used for all of our “fishing trips.” The 1953 two tone Buick Sedan was used many times down in Baja, Mexico. It even fell into a two foot deep gully as our mom spotted the ocean while driving on a dirt path. “Look, the ocean” caused our dad to jerk the steering wheel as we rounded the corner going downhill into a gully.

So, as far as our family is concerned, our dad, a fanatic of a fisherman, had his wall of poles, all cleaned and ready to go to any fishing environment. From a fat almost 1 inch “big tuna” pole and reel to a dinky ¼ inch trout pole and small spinning reel. They all fit the road trip during our fishing/vacation journeys.

For adding more to the fire, we also had a 4 hp green Mercury Outboard motor on a rack. He used to put it in the trunk for all road trips to put on a rental boat at the inland lakes. He even made me a custom fishing pole with a good luck, gold spun cap on the cork handle. It was used for fishing and later on, kite flying with all sorts of reels from spinning to crank handle reels. The set up was perfect for our granddaughter to use for flying kites.

The action with the small fishing pole on the beach, flying kites was like fishing on a lake. It helped our toddler granddaughter fly all sorts of kites and not get tangled with the flip lines provided by the kit builders. The same technique was used to allow the line to go out, raising the kite. Also, bringing in the kite using the same crank reel technique, including pulling back as if a deep sea tuna was on the end of the line… YRMV
