I don't think it has been run; still in build stage.

On you tube there are videos of the B&S v8 being built, running, and installed in a garden tractor. It has since been con erred to water cooling. Just search Briggs & Straton v8 on youtube.

The Studebaker DOHC engine was engineered by Leo Goossen and built by Indy mechanic Willy Utzman for a J.C. Agajanian car. When it was started in the pits with the auxiliary starter the snout of the crank snapped off. The car never turned a wheel in competition.

That was hard luck in deed, bet it would of been super*:D:cool:,after working bugs out, just no $$$$$ to play big by Studebaker :(,an JC was in over load, with other stuff already..:( I would of loved to see it go on,but was not to happen.

The first hotrod V8 engine I looked for in mid 50's,when building my 28A*,with hopes of finding was a Sutdebaker V8*,,but found a Ford Thunderbird V8Y for free:),so stopped hunting.!
A little extra, too know before all that;; :D

The motor is installed in a 1969 Plymouth Barracuda notch back. I don’t know the current owner but there are some YouTube videos on the car, search Ball Stud Hemi 1969 Cuda

It’s been a while so I’ll revive the thread with Chet Herbert’s V16 SBC. It wasn’t two V8’s inline, actually Chet turned the front block around and joined the fronts of the two blocks together as seen by the distributor on the forward block. That injector looks like an Enderle Bug Catcher but Chet cast and made a number of his own injector hats with his improvements added.

Here are photos of the two cranks joined nose to nose -

And lastly there was one, common oil pan.

Very innovative but I don’t recall if it was successful or not.

I have watched this particular video over and over a number of times. As a fan of the GM inline 6 banger's, this particular engine build, is truly a joy to watch, at how this engine is truly amazing.
    Enjoy from Dennis.

Wow, "The Baloney Slicer..." Green Monster Number 10. Baloney or Balogna was a staple in our house. ever since our dad brought home a huge log of Baloney. His friend owned a butcher shop and said he had to try this new item they created. It was about 2 feet long and about 4-5 inchers across. It looked like a giant hot dog. even with the ends crimped like the little hot dogs we liked, too. But, it was huge.

    Hello,

Walt Arfons and his brother, Art made a new creation. It had an Allison V12 that was not hooked to a drive axle. Instead that propeller on the back provided the "umph" for the race car.

The Arfons Brothers from Ohio were considered odd. When everyone else was using Hemi motors for the top speed dragsters, they used aircraft motors on some sturdy chassis concoctions. Needless to say, they did not look like the top racers everywhere with their aircraft motor powered race cars. Besides having 4 more cylinders, they were unusual to say the least.

    upload_2025-9-10_3-56-25.png

When we made an engine install or swap, we used a small chain hoist to make thing easier to drop in or lift up the SBC motor, to make the exchange. I can’t imagine what the set up would be to make such a large engine swap at the Arfons Garage. Yikes!

“Ay, oh, way to go, Ohio
    I went back to Ohio
    But my pretty countryside
Had been paved down the middle
By a government that had no pride…”

    Jnaki

That idea did not last long and the results were not what they wanted, so back to the drawing board and a new configuration. Now, we were reading about a new faster Green Monster from Ohio. It was going faster than any of the other versions of the "Green Monster" builds. This new version was labeled Number 11. And yes, it was green.

In 1959, we saw the latest and fastest Number 11 at Lion's Dragstrip.
upload_2025-9-10_4-2-32.jpeg The arrival was publicized locally and the dragstrip was as full as one could get for any drag race meet to that point.
We were fortunate to see the Green Monster #11 at Lion’s Dragstrip during July of 1959. They had traveled West to showcase some runs on various West coast dragstrips with Lion’s Dragstrip starting it off.

No, we did not get to see "The Baloney Slicer," but it was a first time viewing of one of those crazy Midwest drag racer's idea of builds and racing... Yikes!

One of our friends just happened to take this old film with an 8 mm camera and it showcased the moment.
    upload_2025-9-10_4-18-2.png
My brother, his friend and a tall kid standing behind them watching. but the unusual thing was in the foreground, a man with a Dobson Hat, just happened to walk by and got put into the scene. Yes, it was our dad, who had driven to the drags that day and wanted to see the unusual event. YRMV

    Note:
Here is the actual sound of the Allison powered race car in action.

Re: Arfons Baloney Slicer - Compared to the size of the props that WW II fighters were using near the end of the war that prop looks hopelessly tiny by comparison.

EDIT: I READ THE CAPTION ON THE PHOTO AND IT SAID THE ENGINE ALSO HAD A MECHANICAL DRIVE CONNECTION TO THE REAR SWING AXLE.
THAT MAKES MORE SENSE NOW, AND REAFFIRMS MY CONFIDENCE IN THE ARFON'S ENGINEERING TALENT (NOT THAT THEY NEED MY AFFIRMATION).

Green Monster 10 was powered by an air-cooled Ranger V-12 of 770 cu. in., much smaller and lighter than the Allison V-1710. Good for about 1/2, or less, the horsepower of the Allison...

I have been to the Speedway Museum twice, but i have not seen the new addition.Supposed to be at least 90,000 sq.ft. now. They doubled the size. The old museum took a whole day to go through,

I took these photos at least 20 years ago at Rt. 66 Drag Strip, this car was only on exhibit, it was not in competition. I have never been able to find any information on this DOHC engine other than it was said to have been designed and built by Chet Herbert. Has anybody got any info on it? I like to use the word "maybe" when I'm just guessing, my only knowledge is articles in magazines, some years ago, I do know that they did do some major re-engineering.
