I have many flathead pix stored in my computer. All 21-stud engines are in the same folder. 1932 engines have 21 studs. At least the pix of Henry standing by a '32 engine show 21 studs. How do I differentiate '32 engines from other 21 stud engines? I made a 1932 folder but don't know which engines go there and which go in the 21-stud folder. It looks like the water outlet comes out the front of '32 engines. Do any other 21-stud engines have the outlet there? There must have been some drawbacks to the '32 engine since they only made it one year. What caused them to change the design? tia
32-34 had the divots on the front of the block between water outlet and cam gear cover filled in. And the 32-only feature that gives them away from any other year is the water spigots on the bottom front corners of the block point straight down. 33 and up pointed at an angle.

Thanks. I've started reading this thread but obviously it will take a while to get through (and understand) all of it.
So, if you're looking at a pic of an engine installed in a vehicle and you can't see the downward facing water spigots are there any other distinguishing features that identify 32 vs later engines?
At a glance (or in a photo), a 32 looks just like most other 21 studders with the water pump in the head. But be assured, most of them, even the ones in 32’s, are not the original 32 engine. They are a rare bird nowadays.
Pan could have been switched out or on. Lots of other particulars specific to 32. I thought he meant block only. Other items: water pumps, coil, dipstick, carb, generator, intake, fuel pump, air cleaner, fan A lot of restorer info for a hot rodding website. Are we not men? We are resto!
What I'm looking for is identification from the pix I have on my computer. Most will not show the items mentioned above; nearly all of my pix are in hot rods so carb, generator, etc., will most likely not be original. Here's a typical pic. Can you tell from this pic if it's 32 or is it later?
Also,On the front of the block between the water inlet and motor mount threaded holes is smooth on a '32,no cavity. The link in post #3 has pics. The second pic shows the front of the block. That is all you need to quickly ID a 32 V8 block.Post #5 ,first pic shows the post 32 block with the cavity's. The very early '33's had the smooth front also BUT the petcock ports were angled.
Ok, frenchie is correct, I was wrong in post #2. The divot next to the cam cover is a 32-33 thing, not 34. Otherwise, he agrees with the easiest way to tell a 32, the petcock drains in the front corners point straight down.
